: 2008 Xterra Stock, What to do first
rockclimbing2182 05-14-2010, 02:47 PM Hi All,
I am based out of Salt Lake City Utah and was wondering what you all would start doing on a 2008 Xterra with no current mods on it. I am going to be putting new tires on it 265-75-16's and I am still undecided between the BFG AT KO's, Goodyear wrangler Duratracs or the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor's. I have heard the Silent Armor's are a bit better on MPG, hardpack snow/ice, and handling on the highway but you sacrifice some of the AT ability the Duratrac and AT KO offer.
I did run Chicken corners down in Moab on the Long-Trail stock tires which are nearly bald (siping is pretty much worn away) so I am thinking the Silent Armors may be the way to go.
However moving past the tires (only mentioned due to the extra bit of height i will be gaining), I want to put a lift on but cannot due to the surrounding parking garages I must use for work.
So overall I am thinking the first mods should be body armor since the lift is getting ruled out. What would you guys start with and what brands or plates?
Thanks
john

I'd do 285/75/16's, as they fit your rig stock...over the OEM sized 265/75/16's.
That will give you some trail capability to help compensate for the street treads.
Sliders are job 1, and then skids, as you are correct, if you can't clear everything, you'll need them.
:D

Loki512 05-14-2010, 07:11 PM for the 2nd gen (which you are at an 08) you can also look at nxrocks.com the sliders and skids are about the same $$$ but the wait time is MUCH shorter. lots of guys love them. currently, he is prepping for GONE Moab and won't be taking orders til June 1, but the wait time is under a month usually. i've been trying to get the money saved to get these myself :)
ejwoods 05-14-2010, 08:29 PM You can also look at custom fabrication if you don't want to go with shrock or nxrocks. Can be a lot cheaper if you do it yourself.
Suckafish 05-16-2010, 07:48 PM All I can add, is.... ^^^ What these guys said!
Go with a larger tire, you will still fit in garages. Plus, you will be airing down (or should be) on these trails. So stock size tires aired down. yeah, go for the gold and get 33's.
Sliders, then armor.

rockclimbing2182 05-16-2010, 08:56 PM Dummy me forgot about those as well.
Thanks for all the information guys, this will easily peel out any excess funds I have left after the tires.
I didnt bump up to the 285-75-16 from the stock 265-70-16 but did go 265-75-16.
I ended up going with the Goodyear Duratrac's.

How hard is it (dont have a garage) to put on sliders and skids yourself? I have some tools but no one I really run with has a major garage right now with a bunch of tools and somehow I doubt without a lift out a lift that you could put on skid plates but may be able to put on the sliders.
Just curius as to your opinion on that.
Thanks
John

For sliders, I didnt jack the truck up at all. I did use some jacks and jack stands to position the sliders, so I could mark them for drilling. (I didnt have any help, so the jacks were great.
For skids, a garage isnt needed either. I did put it up on some ramps that I picked up from autozone. That way I could get the drill in a nice position to drill straight. But no garage is needed. And a crap load of tools isnt needed either. Just obviously, the ones you need for the job.
