: some questions about 2wd and offroading
loydma3 06-27-2007, 06:30 PM hey guys, im very new to offroading....i actually have never been.
ill skip the story and just ask plainly...are there any guys doing it in the 2wd X and how is it going for them
2006xterrax 06-27-2007, 08:22 PM i wouldn't dare offroad in 2wd. it's asking for a trouble. xterra is 4500 lbs, very easy to get stuck in 2wd.
i've heard of people off roading with a 2wd xterra
json3904 06-28-2007, 05:22 AM ricer and myself both have 2wd and it handeled real good.... ricer ran wih mud tires last time we wnt and i had a/t but either way they are both 2wd
Ricer-X 06-28-2007, 06:38 AM Go Look At The General Sams Threads In The Trail Talk Forum, You'll See What Ive Put Mine Through
nimnifnof 06-28-2007, 07:02 AM no problems here either. You're just gonna have to be careful what you attempt. I wouldn't try rock crawling or deep mud bogs, but other than that the 2wd xterra is still a pretty capable vehicle after you loose the crappy stock BFG Long Trails.
Ricer-X 06-28-2007, 08:49 AM totally clicked edit instead of quote, i didnt change anything in your post man. sorry, i didnt however have this typed in your post, whic i thought was my post. so heres my reply!
or the stock general grabbers
with 2wd its all about picking the right line and remembering that your front end will not pull itself over obstacles and that the rear end wont push it over either
loydma3 06-28-2007, 10:26 AM So now....one thing i realize if that my offroad skill is not (has not been established) I have raced rally in a awd carsetup before....
what are some entry level tires for offroading, reason I ask...Im not ready to go soooo hardcore- i wanna test the grounds and see if this is something I want to do....
so tires....other must have equipment...
thanks so much guys
Ricer-X 06-28-2007, 10:36 AM GUYS ON yotatech are raving over the nitto terra grapplers
they say its the best all terrain for you $.
and theres like 1000s of 1000s of members over there, 80% of them wheel, and 75%ish of those peeps say that tire is the shit
json3904 06-28-2007, 11:36 AM in my area there are alot of 4x4's and they either run buckshot which is a cheap but great offroad tire, nitto which was prev posted and both bfg a/t and m/t..... but there are a bunch of them that run a off brand called mud trac (i think thats what they are called) which one of them my buddy runs with and he loves them..... but like inprev threads anthony and tjtj have posted that you need to find a tire that dose what you want it to do.... im posting from my phone so cant quote from them but ricer or sombody else that knows what hreads im talking about can post it for you if not look under one of my threads i think i called it tires and it should have the info you are looking for. i looked at alot of tires but i ended up going with yokahama geolanders, now i havent taken it out and played with it since putting them on but they seem to have a good tread pattern for a street/all-terrain since it didnt get the a/t (not in stock at the time) so good luck and hope you find the right tire for your needs.....
nimnifnof 06-28-2007, 01:43 PM woot on the Nitto's! I'll be getting mine in and on next week. Got'm from Discount Tire Direct for $484, 265/75-16. I think the price went up to $509ish right after I bought mine.
AZ-Ted 06-28-2007, 02:34 PM I had an '01 2wd X for 5 years, and I took it offraod regularly. Agree with other poster, 2wd will get stuck in the deep stuff (mud/snow/sand) easier, and you can't crawl over anything. There is much more tire spin involved in wheeling a 2wd, so expect some additional tire wear.
Once I could afford it, I moved up to the 4x4 X, and I love it. Although, I must say, I am glad I learned a lot about off-roading in the 2wd before moving up to the 4x4.

TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE BOLD
loydma3 06-28-2007, 06:56 PM YOU DUDES ARE 1 MILLION TIMES MORE FRIENDLY THAN ALL THE HONDA FORUMS IVE EVER BEEN ON (yes im shouting that!)
Ricer-X 06-29-2007, 06:02 AM truck guys are different, plus the honda crowd(which i used to be a part of)
tends to be more of a younger-less mature-im better than you no matter what-and heres 100 excuses why-crowd, i hope youwill stick around
loydma3 06-29-2007, 05:30 PM LOL- very true- i guess i use to be one of those guys as well
J Everett 01-19-2009, 01:18 PM Yep. I quit posting on the Focaljet (Ford Focus) forums for the same reason. I've only been on here a day and I already feel much more welcomed. Thanks guys.
I too will be wheeling occasionally in a 2WD Xterra, but I used to do it all the time in my Ranger. Nothing pisses off a Jeep owner more than getting pulled out of the mud or sand by a 2WD mini truck. :)
As was mentioned previously, it's all about picking your line and avoiding the deep stuff. Also, it's a very good idea to air down your tires (especially in dry sand) and have a way to air 'em back up when you get back on the pavement. Flotation, flotation, flotation. One of the first serious upgrades I'll be making will be installing a locker (haven't decided if the Nissan elec. locker is the way to go yet). You wouldn't believe the difference a good locker can make on a 2WD truck.
skoobysx 01-19-2009, 01:21 PM Ricer-X has one bad Xterra!
Ive never had to put mine in 4X4 yet, youll be alrights, just play it smart and watch where your going.
Ricer-X 01-19-2009, 01:43 PM you are supposed to use 4wd at least 10 miles per month to keep everything working
people dont engage their 4x4 for very long periods fo time and wonder why things like their hubs dont work or other stuff like that
and thanks homegirl, just wit til you see pix of my new cosmetic upgrades!
aznboihoy03 01-19-2009, 01:50 PM hey theres nothing wrong with a little 2wd action! i try to go as often as i can but i always bring buddy w/ 2wd or 4wd. just gotta go out there and tear it up as much as you can. i did alot that i thought i couldnt do in 2wd, youll find out for yourself.
oh yeah, from being a past honda owner, this kind of hobby is waaay better than racing around getting your stuff stolen every month. the month you'd put towards the speeding tickets you can buy some tires or other parts.
midget28 01-19-2009, 02:24 PM 2wds can be as capable as 4wd with the right tires and a locker. Just be warned youll prolly get stuck a few times until you figure out the vehicles limits and then prolly every now and then after trying to "push" those limits lol. Good rule of thumb though dont try the mud lol and if one of your buddies in a 4wd says "hey why dont you try this..." dont do it hes waiting for you to get stuck lol.
Rons04X 01-19-2009, 05:19 PM so im really confused now......my X has a shifter for2wd and 4wd so is it a 4X4?????
J Everett 01-19-2009, 05:27 PM Yup. You've got one shifter for the transmission (either manual or auto) and one for the transfer case. The transfer case is what you engage to drive the front wheels and engage low gear for all four wheels. If you've got two shifters (1st gen) or a knob on the lower dash in front of the transmission shifter (2nd gen), you've got four wheel drive.
And like Ricer X said, it's a good rule of thumb to engage 4WD at least once a month, just to keep everything lubricated and in good working order, just in case you really need it one day.
Rons04X 01-19-2009, 05:32 PM so its a 4X4 right and i wont look stupid if i put a 4X4 sticker on it???? or am i still confuzzled?
vandebogart 01-19-2009, 05:37 PM Yes Ron, its a 4x4. lol
Rons04X 01-19-2009, 05:45 PM I knew that......jk haha thanks Shaun
midget28 01-20-2009, 10:14 AM lol kids these day cant even tell if they have a 4x4 or not lol.
vandebogart 01-20-2009, 08:33 PM Haha i know right!?! i guess im still a kid tho at 17 lol
jakeryan 01-22-2009, 03:50 PM I have 2WD as well and I kinda wanna take it through this trail. No rock climbing or anything just dirt and sometimes mud. My bud did it in his 2WD truck. I'm just hoping its not to extreme
rgallant 01-22-2009, 05:08 PM Hey there,
I have a 4x4 but I mostly run in 2wd unless it gets weird or I am on a new trail.
The trick is to know what your vehicle can manage.
If in doubt stop get out and walk through any iffy patches first, figure out how you are going to tackle it.
Avoid any brown water puddles, you don't know what is in there. Watched a jeep go 4 feet into one, then nose dive into a big hole looked pretty funny with the rear tires in the air.
Where ever possible take a line that avoids putting both sides into ruts (high centre is bad).
Mud unless it is very shallow should also be avoided as you will be more likely to get stuck. Wet grass as well, it can be like driving on ice.
In general use common sense and if in doubt stop and turn around unless someone with a 4x4 and recovery gear is there to get you out.
aznboihoy03 01-22-2009, 07:10 PM hmm well whenever i see something ahead that my look impossible, i gun right thru it :D
