Pencil and hose clamp for a broken brakeline done that one 3 times so far. Spare ubolt and centering pin had that happened to me twice and once on a buddies rig. Spare brake fluid and power steering fluid. Extra bolts and nuts are always handy for mcgiviering things.

I thought this would be a great idea for me since I'm new to this but...I don't know how to fix the things you guys are talking about? Is there a fix it for dummy's book I can buy that has these "basic" problems in it?:aufkopfhauen-big:

There's no book per se, but a search through the Club Xterra archives will lend some results.

So if we’re talking “spear parts” here's my list;

1. front axle
2. hub
3. torsion bar adjusters (one for each side)
4. drive shaft u-joint
5. front break line

plus the tools, fluids, HiLift, jack stand to make the repair. I bring other stuff but that’s my top 5. All of these things I’ve ether broken or have seen break.

Tom I think the CV's are weak on the Gen 2s.... Im thiking this is part of why people upgrade to the Titan front... I think!

I've been reading around here and new X and it seems that our dear friends at Nissan made it so you have to replace the whole axle. at $400 to $500 a pop.

If you're talking parts, not tools my list is:

1) Spare alternator (if you're expecting water crossings)

2) Spare cv shaft (although if you have manual hubs, you can always unlock and drive home)

3) Spare torsion bar (if applicable to your rig)

4) Tire repair kit (should have one even if you're on-road, easier than changing the spare in most cases) (also carry a pump, even if it's just a $20 wal-mart cig-lighter pump)
Spare hub

5) Jb weld (make sure it's the kwik version) incase you puncture something

6) a solvent to clean oil incase you need to use the jb weld, a can of brake clean works best

7) Spare bottles of oil for various items (engine, transmission, transfer, diff's)

Here's what I carry:

1) one spare CV axle

2) complete steering setup (centerlink, tre's and tra's, idler arm all preassembled for immediate swap)

3) two sets of auto hubs

4) spare TRA's and TRE's

5) Tool kit: complete socket set (metric and standard)
1/2" breaker bar
1/2" ratchet
3/8" ratchet (x2)
1/4" ratchet
5lb sledge and 5lb brass hammer
rubber mallet
full screwdriver set including an extendable magnet
torque wrench
metric and standard allen keys
c-clamps
hose clamps
zip ties
duct tape
electrical tape
assorted lengths of 10 and 12 gauge wire
electrical kit with assorted connectors and wire stripper/crimper
assortment of nuts, bolts and mending plates
loctite and jb weld

6) 30,000lb snatch strap

7) multiple ratchet straps (good to tie down a motor with a broken motor mount)

8) 10 x 10 tarp (for lying on the ground doing repairs or making an awning for lunch)

9) hi-lift jack

10) full-size spare

11) brake fluid

12) one gallon container for water (leaking radiator, clean windshield, etc)

I'm wanting to add spare t-bar anchors and adjusters to this but haven't found any yet.

REMEMBER THAT IT MIGHT NOT ALWAYS BE YOUR RIG OR AN XTERRA YOU HAVE TO REPAIR.

OK some of you are scaring me!
I am planning my first serious 3-day off road trip at the end of May and I think I am good for tools and recovery gear - but what spare parts are really necessary?

I'm not rock crawling, mostly just powerline and old logging roads. Probably lots of muddy holes and the occasional steep, muddy hill.

I already have upgraded TRAs (just not installed yet) and I have a few $$ left in my budget, does it make sense to pick up some spare parts, and what?

drbandkgb

It mostly depends on the type of wheeling your doing...

Tow strap ALWAYS..

Alex Topousis

I think it is a fine balance between having everything to fix anything and the weight disadvantage. I know people that carry pretty much everything but they also tend to break a lot of stuff. In my opinion the weight is the reason for it. Also generally the heavier you are the harder it is to get over things. I'm not saying to not take tools and spares but you also don't need to take your entire garage worth of stuff. end of rant

I'm looking to fill up my Smittybuilt G.E.A.R. seat cover molle pouches. What would be some GOTTA HAVE tools? (Other than the obvious.. spare tire, jack, shovel, tire iron, tow rope, jumper cables, flashlight, fire extinguisher, pocket knife, first aid kit, extra batteries, etc.

I'm talking socket & ratchet set and or box wrenches (standard or metric - I'm going to assume metric because it's a Japanese vehicle).

SLIME or Fix-a-flat just in case.

Any helpful suggestions?

Drake,
Your list is awesome!! Not that I do a lot of off-roading. But some items like fluids and such are a necessity for any daily driver.

I don't see myself replacing a hub or a cv joint on the side of the road on my way to work. But the tire plus, Walmart 12v plug in compressor, brake fluid, water or coolant would be a must have.
