So I spend a lot of time on the road for my job with a lot of downtime in hotels. One evening I grew tired of the usual forums I frequent, how much midget porn can one guy watch anyway, and went in search of some new forums to lurk around at. I ended up here and have spent 100’s of hours soaking in all the knowledge I could and coming up with a plan to resurrect my X and rectify all the maintenance I have ignored over the last 10 years and 160,000 miles.

As it was when I started.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0320.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0321.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0325.jpg

The first priority was to get current on the maintenance I had been neglecting. I re-packed the front wheel bearings and replaced the seals. Next I changed the fluids in the front/rear diffs, transfer case, and transmission and then learned that I was a mere 55,000 miles over the timing belt change interval. So parts were ordered and I waited nervously for the timing belt to snap while waiting for a free weekend to get it done.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/001.jpg

To say the timing belt was overdue for replacement is an understatement. With absolutely no effort you could deflect the belt about 45mm…….. sweet variable cam timing! :mocking: Basically the belt was stretched to the point that it was 15mm longer than the new one.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/1-5.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/1-6.jpg

I also installed a new radiator as the old one was fairly thrashed. I ordered the larger radiator for a 02 S/C X after reading this thread (http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7329) and finding out it would fit. It now runs just a bit cooler but the big difference is that the temperature never changes. Left it idling for 30 minutes in 95 degree weather and the needle never moves. Big thanks to chairmnofthboard for posting the above linked thread.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/xterraradiator.jpg

With the basic maintenance issues mostly cleared up I moved on to fixing all the faded trim. If any one project lit the mod fire more than anything it was this one. I stood back and looked at my X after I was done and low and behold there was the truck I loved beginning to creep back from the land of the grocery getter.

The things you find when removing trim….
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0322.jpg

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0324.jpg

Generally not a good idea to lean the parts you have drying after sanding and washing against the wife’s Murano, especially if she catches you doing it. Bad idea.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0326.jpg

After the painting….
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0328.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0329.jpg

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0327.jpg

Now I have to find the time to install all the stuff that keeps showing up at my house.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/BL/002.jpg

Also have headers and a Nismo cat back to install and shocks and suspension parts on the way.

Ok so now that the BL is completed, and before I install the suspension, time to take advantage of the extra room between the chassis and body and get rid of the cracked exhaust manifolds on my X. I have to be in CA for a week or so for my job but when I get back I will get started on the exhaust system.

where did you order the exhaust kit from?

Not really a kit, the headers are from AC and the Nismo cat back is from Ebay when they were on there last year. The two tubes on the right are 304 SS 2.25" OD and I will be using them along with the SS flanges in the center to fab the pipes from the headers to the cat back.

Spending some time this week getting all the heat shields off the exhaust and the manifolds so I can start drowning the manifold studs in PB. Turns out both manifolds were cracked and the PS manifold is cracked in several spots.

My welder buddy with the tubing bender is busy building 300ZX headers and inter coolers so the exhaust has to wait until we can sync up our schedules.

So I installed the suspension instead this week. Went pretty simple and only had to cut out one camber bolt with a saw. The lift ended up being 1.8" due to the slightly longer than 6" shackles but I was able to get where I needed to be on the front after re-indexing the t-bars.

My wife walked in as I was finishing up, stared at it for a moment and said it was obnoxious. I stood next to her for a moment and looked at the truck, turned and grabbed her by the shoulders and said " You're right honey, it is obnoxious....aint it COOL! :nick-big: Wait until she takes a look at it next week with 33's. :mocking:

Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 33x12.50x15 and I'll post what has to be trimmed with pics.

Painting wheels today.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0385.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0386.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Paint/DSCN0387.jpg

Edit to add: Folks keep asking so here is how I prepped the wheels for paint.

On the rims the big white pieces of paper are index cards. My rims are painted with RustOleum spray on bedliner. It gives them a texture and it's easy to touch up when they get bashed up on rocks. The process I used for the rims was as follows. I did two at a time, you can do all four, but I need my truck to get to work.

Dismount the wheels.

Clean the rim and center caps with a mag wheel cleaner you need to get off as much of the grease and brake dust as possible.

Allow the wheels/center caps to dry.

Wipe them down with acetone using clean paper towels. When the paper towel gets dirty get rid of it and get a new one. In order for the bedliner/paint to stick the wheel needs to be clean.

Take a Scotch Brite pad, green or maroon...maroon works better, and sand down the rim/center caps. You're not trying to remove the clear or the paint just rough it up enough to give the bedliner/paint something to adhere to.

Once sanded wipe down the rim/center cap again with acetone until it is clean and dust free.

Place the index cards between the rim and the tire, sometimes it helps to air the tire down to get them in there. If you air down make sure you can air up again.

Tape up the valve stem and the lug nut seating cone. The lug nut seating cone is important as this is where the lug nut presses against the rim. If you use bedliner especially and don't tape up the seating cone there is a good chance the wheel may become loose later on as the lug nuts will not torque properly and loosen up. Blue tape cut into circles works great for this. On the wheel weights you can either paint them or remove them. If removed you will need to have the wheels re-balanced.

Place the wheels/center caps on a large piece of cardboard and start painting. Lite coats work the best and move around the wheel and spray it from all directions to get even coverage. I would put on at least 2 to 3 coats of bedliner/paint. Two wheels will need 1 1/2 cans of bedliner to paint. Keep shaking the can as you move to a new spot to spray from as there is an aggregate mixed in with the paint to give it texture and it tends to settle if you don't keep shaking it. Also when the can starts to feel empty stop using it and get a fresh can. As the can sprays it runs out of aggregate before it runs out of paint and you will end up with a shiny wheel.

Once they are painted they need to sit for 24 hours. Don't unmask them, don't fool with them, just let them sit. They will need to be someplace warm(70 degrees) to cure correctly.

After 24 hours remove the cards and tape, air them up, and mount them.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/DSCN0408.jpg

I was actually very surprised how quiet the Duratracs are up to about 70 mph below 70 you hardly hear them.

On the way back from the tire install I could only turn the wheel from 11:00 to 1:00 without getting into the plastic so out with the dremel tool to do some trimming.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/DSCN0406.jpg
With any luck the front bumper will eventually go so I just removed the end piece and cut the plastic bumper down a bit.

Found the TRE's at Rock Auto after reading this post (http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13144) by Alpine Spirit last year.

EDIT TO ADD: These are nice beefy TRE's but after I installed the Grassroots center link I had clearance issues with the zerc fittings hitting and hanging up the steering. So if a Grassroots center link is in your future you may not want to run these.

BTW... whenever you are ready to get it dirty ;), we can hit up Hale Mountain or Hawk's Pride. I can always round up a member or two from the Rocket City Rock Crawlers to join us. I know you spend a lot of time on the road but if you're interested, you should come to one of our meetings or trail rides (membership requires two meetings and two trail runs before getting voted in). We have some private property at an undisclosed location (to keep trespassers out) that is a lot of fun and a good test for the X. Rock gardens, stair cases, ledge climbs and mud holes. It's a blast!

Here's a link to the galleries of some of our trail runs on the property:

Managed to tie up a few loose ends this weekend and get out and do some lite wheeling.

Installed the SS brake lines and flushed all of the 10 year old fluid out of the system.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/DSCN0429.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/DSCN0430.jpg

When I cranked the T-bars I had to re-index and I set the drivers side adjuster to far outboard (to much angle) and it was very hard to crank back up. The bolt head had so much pressure against the pivot anchor that it shaved 2mm to 3mm off the bolt head and deeply grooved the pivot anchor. So not wanting the weakened adjuster bolt to fail on a trail I ordered new ones and replaced them both.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/DSCN0436.jpg

I had a bit of corrosion on the drivers side rocker panel from where a panel was replaced after an accident. Sanded it down, applied some Mort Rust converter, masked of the rockers, and rattle canned both of the rockers with spay on bed liner.

A friend of mine here in N. Alabama has around 700 acres of property that he and a few of the guys at work wheel on. We had some serious storms a few days ago so we went out to clear trees and do a little wheeling. The entire area is either a climb or a descent with a lot of off camber stuff. Very hot out today so not a lot of pics.

Nice! Was that up in the Skyline area?

If you're ever bored and want to do a quick jaunt through a muddy road, you can hit Dairy Road there in the Swan Creek WMA. It is right at the south end of Lucas Ferry. Mostly gravel but the last long section can get really sloppy after a rain. You might even get lucky enough to pull out a "young'un" in a Z71 or two. :D

I'm down for that for sure. There is Hale Mountain and Hawk's Pride in North Alabama between us. Smaller but fun parks. Similar to Wooly's in most respects.

Don't know maybe CC but I still am waiting to see our schedule for that month some things are still up in the air for October. I'd like to get the rock sliders fabbed up before then, but I am at the will of our welder for such projects.

No biggie man. I know how it is. I miss a lot of them too because of work. The cool thing is you don't have to attend the meetings to wheel with the group. I think it requires two meetings and two wheeling trips to get voted in but you don't have to attend meetings in order to go on the rides. Their membership dues are expensive compared to others but it does give you rights to club property to go wheeling on and while it's not a big plot of land, the trails there are a blast. Giant mudholes, staircases and boulder fields. Good stuff! :D Plus we also have quarterly rides to the area offroad parks, small runs on the property and a big yearly trip out to Colorado for those that can go. It's a good group of folks to be with. Lots of families too. One guy has a jeep and each of his daughter's have their own jeeps and they can wheel the s*** out of them. Plus one is a hottie too. lol

So Saturday morning I started installing the headers and I'm still working on it. :aufkopfhauen-big: It's actually going pretty smooth it's just taking a lot of time to make sure everything is just the way I want it. In about 12 days it's going to have some new sections fabbed for the exhaust so taking some extra time to plumb the electrics to make it easier for the fab guys to get it back apart and get the pipes fabbed the way I want it.

Some cracked manifold pics for your enjoyment.

Drivers side has one big crack.

Headers are installed but I still need to get the larger diameter down tubes installed. No pics, nothing really to take pics of just to cramped. Install pics are in the AC Header DIY (http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23258) thread.

Mid range and peak power are improved and should be even better with the larger down tubes. Also I picked up an additional 24 miles on the first tank of fuel. Not bad considering I've been driving like a lunatic. :mocking: Should get even better once I get out of the throttle a bit.

Some Iphone videos of the headers in action, not the greatest but you get the idea. Sounds much better in person.

Tools are nice to have and I've acquired quite a few in the 27 years that I have worked as one type of mechanic or another. You just have to aquire a basic set and build up from there.

As far as experience trust me you just have to get in there and have at it. I'm 100% self taught, no trade schools or formal schooling as a mechanic. As far as the mods on my Xterra go I learned how to do them by reading the DIY's here and listening to the knowledge of the other members. Almost all of my mechanical experience is building and maintaining roadrace motorcycles so a lot of this is as new to me as it is to you. The best way to learn this stuff is to get hands on and just do it. If you get stuck someone here will always be willing to help out. :)

X3 on the above post.

I've never been much of a wrench-jockey myself. I was always the one who took my vehicles to a specialty shop to have stuff installed. When I bought my X and started to get into serious offroading, I knew it was beneficial to start learning how to do things myself. I started off simple doing the PML. That gave me the confidence to do the body lift which gave me the confidence to do the UCA install which lead to more and more things I was willing to attempt to do myself. With the guidance of great members and threads here, I've yet to hit a "wall" that resulted in me calling in extra help. I too started out with a basic metric socket set and a few wrenches. As time went by I added new tools here and there like torque wrenches, pickle forks and other purpose tools.

Don't be afraid to test yourself. You'll be amazed at how much you can figure out on your own. Automobiles are relatively basic machines not space shuttles. :)

When you are BROKE is when you MOST want to do it yourself...as, you do not charge as much as someone ELSE would do do the same thing on YOUR truck.

:D

Being a student is when I started learning about fixing stuff, because otherwise, I wouldn't HAVE stuff.

A used CJ that didn't run was my first victim....it was rusted to crap, and wouldn't start, and the owner hadn't seen it run for years...and wanted it gone.

I gave him $50 from my hard earned paper route money for it....and spent about a week figuring out what did what.

If you need a tool wait until you NEED it, then get it.

Re-Tool, and Harbor freight, etc, have el cheapo tools that will get you through - not a as a pro-mechanic per se, but, so you can change the spark plugs and the oil, or do a BL, etc.

You will see that there's only a few sizes you need of things, and that's all you need to get....we're talking about a few bucks here and there....that's it really.

All the tools you may need for what you are talking about doing can be purchased for what you'd pay a shop to change your oil, once.

:wink-big:

To the part in red, sage wisdom and great advice. I have spent most of my life making a living as a mechanic so I can not afford to be stuck looking for tools, I have to have them when I need them. For working on my Xterra it's the same tools over and over so the rest of my tools, for this task at least, are wasted. Some perspective on what I'm talking about. I have a work tool box and a home box. My home box has somewhere in the neighborhood of $20K in Snap On and Craftsmen tools in it and I doubt I use more than 1% of the tools in it to work on my Xterra. For those not making a living as a mechanic I'd wager you could get by with $150 or less in tools. Figure out what tools you will need for a certain job and buy those tools. Buying a complete set is nice but you will have tools in the set you will never use.

As far as time goes, make time. Most of the mods that everyone here does can be accomplished in 8 hours or less.

You know the funny thing about that is my buddy I work with who does the welding is all fired up and wants to start on the bumper right away. I'm all about that but DOM tubing is EXPENSIVE. So the bumpers going to have to wait until the end of January to start so I can gather up the funds for the materials.

Got me.....I could be wrong, it's happened many times before. :pfeilimkopf-big:

The rears are the part number listed on the right in that pick, and are the ones AC uses in the articulator lift kit. https://www.4x4parts.com/nissan/bilstein-rear-shock-p-4229.html

The 5150's I see on AC's site all seem to have a piggyback reservoir. https://www.4x4parts.com/nissan/bilstein-shocks-5150-series-c-435_413_109_31.html

Probably nothing. :aufkopfhauen-big: We started a little farther back then I would have liked to with the round tube I would have liked it to be maybe 1 inch farther forward. Also would have liked a little more upward angle on the outer tubes but the doors being able to open dictated the angle we ended up with.

I like them Dave and they should be good it's just been a frustrating project that took way to long to complete.

Nice job Kelly! Those look super sweet but I might be a little biased. ;)

I think you'll be happy with the angle you have them at. When they are snug to the rockers, they are a bit painful to use as a step. Cramping calves are no fun when you are cleaning or working on the top of your X. Plus if and when you get stuck, you'll be thankful to have a nice walking plane to stay dry if you're in mud or water.

Steel City in Birmingham (http://www.scssa.org/) is normally where I shoot mid range. Several of my shooting buddies are members there and I mooch as a guest from time to time. :mocking: You can also go to Maple Ridge in Cullman (http://www.muck-boy.com/Shooting%20Ranges/Muckboy%20Alabama%20Shooting%20Range%20Page.htm) to shoot 500 yards, kind of a weird range but you get targets, backers, and a golf cart to run out and put up your targets for the $15 entry fee.

So recently I decided to go ahead and install the rest of the parts to finish a 3" SL on my truck. 3 pack AAL and torsion bars were ordered and and installed and I ended up here.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/018.jpg

The 3 pack ended up generating 3" of lift by itself and I was not amused. :boese-big:

So the goal all along was to end up with revolver shackles anyway so I ordered a set of revolvers and hoped that they would bring the ride height down to a some what reasonable level.

Revolver folded vs my AC shackles that were to long to begin with. Note that my standard AC shackles were 6.75" instead of 6"....yeah I know once you do the math it's not that much more but all the little bits added up to one big bit.

They came in today and on the way home I intentionally did a panic stop from 50mph on a back road for reference. Went home and installed them and went back to the same section of road and repeated the panic stop and I really could not see the difference. So far my truck is the same as before, maybe that will change as I drive it more.

Spent the day under my truck with an air hammer making more clearance for the drive shaft at full droop with these shocks. Took about an hour and other than the God awful NOISE generated by the air hammer it went pretty smooth. I will probably end up getting longer shocks as the shock from the articulator kit only allows the revolver to open slightly.

With the shocks disconnected at full droop after hammering the cross member for extra clearance.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/002.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/SL/003.jpg

You can see that even after generating additional clearance that the drive shaft will hit at full droop with longer shocks. I would have done more but at this point my hands were numb. The red arrows show where the cross member was rubbing the driveshaft at almost full droop with the shocks still connected and this is why I had to make more room.

I didn't measure before hand, sorry, but if I had to guess I would say at least 1/4" if not more. With the revolvers, 3 pack, and the articulator shocks it would not go to full droop without hitting the crossmember.

BTW - If you want the rear shocks to reach better/allow closer to full rear droop, move the shock mounts up a couple of inches using UB Skidderz...

They replace the rear leaf pack plates that the lower shock mounts are built into....and provide a smooth skid under the leaves with more ground clearance.

They also prove ~ 2" higher than stock, lower mount position...which gives 2" more droop.

I have been on the lookout for a set, but it's my understanding they are no longer in production, not regularly at least. I have some good pics of them I may have to build some.

I spent last night looking at several different manufacturers for longer shocks (Bils, Fox, King,...) but the problem I keep running into is the shocks with the correct extension are not correct for compressed length. I would like to get around 29" extended as I think just massaging the cross member a bit more would allow me to get there. Any more than 29" and I think I would have to cut a channel in the cross member and weld in a new section on the top.

I also would like to avoid limiting straps and I'm still checking into whether or not any of these shock can act as a limiter on extension and compression, like the 5100. Ideally UB Skidderz and my current shocks would be ideal for the time being and upgrading shocks at a later date.

PS - I'd love a few spare blocks.

:D

No problem, when they are being built is unsure as the machine shop guys are a bit backed up at the moment but I'll have them make a few extra. :)

There are many many people who do not understand how they work, and think that they "Unload" and other things that are simply not an issue.

I have heard that they stress the leaves more (They don't, they stress them less, as they pivot to relieve the torsion on the pack)

I have heard that they give flex that doesn't aid traction, as there's no weight on the drooped tire, and its all for show/great RTI scores (They provide MORE weight on the drooped tire, and MORE traction than a std shackle)

I have heard they unload going down hill, and flip you over (They don't, as your shackles do not hold you down....your center of gravity does)

In short, I have heard, and had people argue endlessly about what Revolvers do and don't do, and it all comes down to just not understanding the physics involved.

Even people who got them, didn't understand them, and incorrectly attributed mistakes they made to the revolvers.

People who understand the involved physics are not confused. People who THINK they understand the physics, but don't, do not KNOW that they ARE confused.

:wink-big:

The paint is holding up fine. I pulled both the wiper arms, and if I remember correctly, it just pops out. There may be two bolts or some plastic pins under the hood but I'm pretty sure once you pull the wiper arms it just pops out.

Months ago I purchased an Efan kit from Concept Customs and I finally got around to installing it with help from Xterror04 and Drbandkgb. I went with this kit because I just did not have the free time to fab the shroud and I'm a retard when it comes to electrical bits.

Basically you just need to decide what configuration you need, where to run the wires through the firewall, and where to mount the switch. I had a few questions during the ordering process and the install and Shane at Concept Customs was nothing but helpful. :) A well thought out kit with great support, what more could you ask for. :)

I pulled the upper left acc. outlet as I had already taken power from it to run my CB so it was useless. Plus the location is perfect for the switch as it makes it almost impossible to accidentally bump the switch to the off position. Switch has 3 positions Automatic (activated by the thermo switch or the AC compressor coming on) Manual (constant on activated by the switch) and Off very useful for deep water crossings.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/004.jpg

The switch has four leads two of which go into the engine compartment to the relays and on Xterror04's advice we ran them through the block off in the firewall where I believe the clutch master cylinder would be on a manual transmission Xterra. Drilled a hole and installed a grommet to protect the wires and sealed it with some RTV.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i152/racerxxl/Xterra/Mechanical/006.jpg

In the engine compartment you need to run a hot wire to the battery, a ground to the chassis, connect the thermo switch, and tie into the AC compressor power lead so the fan comes on while the AC is running. The kit comes with a new coolant tube with a bung welded in for the thermo switch as well.

Kelly have you noticed any power difference yet?

I think it winds up a bit quicker....but nothing definite. Odd thing is that the fuel mileage has stayed the same. As TJ always points out the efan needs power to run and my alternator is on its last legs so I wonder if the Alt is working overtime and keeping the fuel mileage down. After free wheeling the fan clutch in my hand I find it hard to believe there is no gain but it could be possible. The other thing is that I have yet to run through more than one tank of gas since the install so I may just need a larger sampling of data. :mocking:
