: Cleaning Plastic Trim
xterragirl 06-09-2007, 10:11 PM I found a cool product called Black Again. It is a thick liquid and you just apply it with an applicator and you are done. It looks like it did when it was new. It is NOT a dye. They also have a product called New Again it does a great job on the interior plastic. Both products make it shine.
EYEGUY05 06-10-2007, 09:02 AM where did you get it?
xterragirl 06-10-2007, 03:24 PM I got it online at Autogeek.com. Shipping is a little high, but worth it.
S_e_X-Terra 06-10-2007, 03:50 PM do you have before and after pics????
fatkid_UH-60 06-10-2007, 08:44 PM i use Mothers Back to Black.
Ricer-X 06-11-2007, 06:54 AM gonna have to try some of the ish mentioned above
nascarjody 06-11-2007, 11:36 AM I use the back to black all the time.
cynicroute 02-18-2008, 05:23 PM I've personally never been a fan of waxes and foams, etc. I use Spray-Nine on my tires which makes them look brand new. Armorall and others may look shiny, but they attract dust like a fat kid to Snickers. Same with dash polish and cleaners. Plain old warm water works for me on the interior.
ggunn 02-18-2008, 06:17 PM I found some stuff to restore the foggy headlight look.
json3904 02-18-2008, 07:50 PM so did i, i bought it from walmart... $20 greenbacks
pvfjr 02-19-2008, 07:16 PM I haven't seen black again in ages. My dad used to use it on our '86 hardbody we had when I was little. I remember it working pretty well too. I don't know where he used to buy it, but it definitely wasn't online in those days. I may have to ask him. Heck, knowing him he still probably has a 15-20 year old bottle sitting around somewhere.
Grinder 02-25-2008, 01:01 PM I used to be in the interior restoration automotive business.
This is what I know and have learned:
Never use Armor all or any other product that will shine up the plastic, as the silicon and other chemicals in the plastice dressers actually accelerates any aging of the plastic, causing brittleness and eventual cracking and fading. Plus, that funky film that comes off on your hands is rather annoying.
The shiney film that is left from the plastic dressers clogs the plastics pores and it is unable to breath and vent any gases..which leads to cracking.
The plastic that the auto manufactures use today is much better quality then it used to be and will easily last the life of the vehicle without any sort of palstic treatments.
Shining up the walls on tires is O.K because the tires usualy are replaced before the damage can be done.
We diluted some Simple Green, sprayed and wiped. If the dirt is really bad, simply use the Simple Green with a soft brissle brish and washed the plastic parts that way.
Same goes for cleaning your cloth seats, simply mist the seat with Simple Green and with a clean towel and rub vigoursly. This should remove any surface dirt and grime. For really bad stains, you'll need to really soak the seat with the Simple Green and use the soft brissle brush and scrub, then you'll have to use a Bissel type vacuum or silular wet-dry vac to suck out the excess water, then vigoursly wipe the the seat with a clean towel to get any excess moister, then let dry for a day.
Also, instead of vacuuming, If you have a air compressor it is much easier to blow out the junk and dirt of your vehicle (wear safty glasses). The air nozzel really can get into seat crevices and blow out all those potatoe chip crumbs! You can also use this on the carpet as well...I have not vaccumend a vehicle in years (except a wet dry for deep carpet and seat cleaning wiht cleaning liquid).. just blow out the crap and use Simple Green for the cleaning! Easy maintence!
I know I sound like a rep for Simple Green, I'm not. It is truly good stuff and smells great and is non-toxic.
The Simple Green glass cleaner doesn't streak at all and is the best I have found..give it a go!
cynicroute 02-27-2008, 01:48 PM Here here, Grinder. Nothing screams 'used car' more than shiny tires and dash. Simple, non-toxic cleaners are the way to go,
Drake 02-27-2008, 02:00 PM I hate hijacking threads but since it's kind of on topic and you guys know detailing... what about leather?
I use Meguiar's to treat my leather but it doesn't do a great job of actually cleaning the leather. What do you guys recommend?
And what can you pick up to clean the dash, doors and consoles? I'm not a big fan of Armor-All myself although I'm guilty of using it.
pvfjr 02-27-2008, 02:17 PM I take a little bucket full of warm water and dishsoap and go after everything. Even the cloth seats clean up nicely like that. This also worked well on everything in my flooded X, got all that embedded dirt right out.
Grinder 02-27-2008, 05:50 PM For leather...I use LEXOL leather conditioner and preservative.
It is the only stuff I used on Ferrari, Lotus, Maserati, Infinity, Acura Mercedes...ect...
By the way, clean leather with warm soap (simple green) and water and maybe a soft plastic brissle brush...scrub GENTLY! Don't brush too hard or too much or the dye might start flaking off if the leather is in poor condition. let dry and treat liberally with Lexol and a clean soft rag. Driver seat bolsters are usually the worst. Don't forget them steering wheels!
The enemy of leather is dirt, because it clogs the poors and leads to cracking and drying out. People often neglect their leather, keep it clean on a regular basis and the leather will last a good long time!
Drake 02-27-2008, 06:15 PM That's what I'm hoping for and so far I've done a good job. I have kept it clean and wiped down with Meguiar's but when I put my BL and IA brace on last weekend I got the seats covered in dirt from rolling around on my driveway (my parking spot is easy to find... it's the one with the mud square outline). I don't want to use the preservative/polish until I get all of the dirt out first. I love my leather!!! Even though it makes for a cold ass on winter mornings... hahaha
Aretelio 03-07-2008, 08:42 AM Neoprene seat covers to the rescue!

pvfjr 04-23-2008, 02:00 PM I think Meguiars makes some stuff called Plast-X for the foggy headlights.

X~Terror 04-30-2008, 01:31 PM How good does it work after the plastic is sun faded?:lutscher-big:
SilverX 04-30-2008, 01:59 PM How good does it work after the plastic is sun faded?:lutscher-big:
I am not for sure. I guess it would depend on how faded it was. You could always try some out. If it works great, if not- well you know how it goes.
FSTASFCK 07-16-2008, 12:09 PM What was this stuff called? I have a slight fog on one light, that bugs the hell out of me
:aufkopfhauen-big:
I got some stuff from walmart that was in a silver package...can get name of it sometime soon...was 20 buks and comes with 1000 grit, 2500 grit, pieces of cloth, cleaner, and sealer...did both my headlights and foglights in about 40 min...they look brand new now!!! HIGH RECOMMEND for people with fogging or yellow headlights...I think the packaging just says headlight restore kit...
Ehsan 07-16-2008, 12:34 PM i know what ur talking about they ahave it at any automotive store
What causes fogging of the lights? A friend recently pointed out that my passenger side front turn signal cover is fogged over in two spots. Looks weird.
TN4x4Xterra 07-16-2008, 08:58 PM Could be a crack, air entering the lenses from inside, and most importantly, the headlight's worst enemy, the sun...
gixxersixxerman 07-16-2008, 09:07 PM i did a set of lights on my friends grand am with the stuff from walmart about 5 months ago........... made ahuge difference before you couldnt see anything even with the brights on, but i was looking at his lights te other day when i was doing a tune up on his car and its starting to oxidize again so this is only a quick fix.... at least on his lights
json3904 07-16-2008, 09:49 PM mine is the same way... i think i did a write up on this process and its supposed to never need it again but mine are starting to fog up again.... there for a while they were real clear.....
TN4x4Xterra 07-16-2008, 09:52 PM I think those products are just for temp. fix only....it would be nice if it was permanent though.
k1w1t1m 07-17-2008, 08:13 AM I've found that the only real fix is to replace the parts although some of these products do delay the inevitable.
json3904 07-17-2008, 08:15 PM nope the package said in bold letters that once you do it you will never need it again....
TN4x4Xterra 07-17-2008, 11:37 PM apparently, you needed it again, lol
json3904 07-17-2008, 11:57 PM yep they lied to me now im going to call them and send then the befor and after and after pics... and yes i mean after after.. LOL
TN4x4Xterra 07-18-2008, 12:02 AM lol, think they'll fix your lamps for free? lol you should put down in your compliant that you deserve a brand new set of lamps from the stealership at the company's cost!
