Just saying hi. New to the forum. My wife and I own a 2002 Xterra. It has 149000 miles on it. It still runs well, but the gas mileage sucks. Does anyone know how to increase the gas mileage?

Get a full tune up!! And switch all fluids to full synthetic!!

has the timing belt/ water pump been changed?

Welcome to the Club!!! The tuneup stuff is the most valuable that can really be done with the Xterra for economy.

had the tune up done at 105000 miles. It increased the mileage to 18. That lasted for about 20000 miles. Now I'm back to 16.3. I do have 149000 on the 02. Other than the mileage, it's been a pretty good vehicle.

gettiung rid of soem weight would be the best way. it would also help your handling, braking and acceleration.
if you dont take it offroad, you could remove; the gas tank guard, the roof rack, the step rails, spare tire, etc

My wife and I use it in the Utah mountains quite often.
