It's me again. Hi.
I have a couple of small scratches here and there on the plastic in the cargo area of my X as well as a couple of small nasties on the dash. Is there any way to reduce or get rid of them?

Add more scratches. It will camouflage the ones that are already there.

Get some offroading in on a really dry day. Leave the windows open. The heavy layer of dust that you'll accumulate will pretty much hide the scratches.
I've long since given up on trying to fix scratches in mine. It is what it is, that's why I don't drive a Ferrari.

Exactly. I got sick of detailing my fleet of exotic cars. The Xterra is extremely low maintenance. So now I get to spend a lot more time working on my airplanes.

You can use a heat gun and lightly go over the scratches with it, (little by little) and it will turn them back to the original color. You can lightly go over them with fine sand paper (600-800 grit) like drbandkgb said also, and then go over it again with the heat gun to bring the color back. Just be careful not to remove to much of the texture. Go slow. It works great, we do it all the time.

So what did you eventually do, and how did it come out? My dash and doors are scratchless, but my cargo has some nice long gouges in it, thanks to a large bicycle being forced into the back. I would eventually like to deal with those...

Rub Vaseline on the scratch. Disappears like magic and stays gone. Don't ask me how it works, it just does.
