: Offroad FAIL!

I figured I would start a thread that we can all get a laugh from. This thread is for posting pics and vids of failed offroading attempts. No matter how extreme, minor or moronic, share it here for all to laugh and/or critique (tastefully please).

So to start, here's a $100,000+ fail. If at first you fail, fail fail again. :mocking:

Oh, just had to post it, didn't you?!

And if you don't know, that's what my truck was built off of, that exact vehicle!

We drove backwards on Golden Spike trail when I had my Toyota (the Lemon Drop) in order to get him started. I had to remove the supercharger in order to get the remnants of the spark plug wires off in order to remove the spark plugs out. The cylinders were full of oil from sitting upside down for a while.

I put it all back together and we made him drive it out, the rest of the way through Golden Spike.

Just had to go there, huh?

If the video shows any off trail antics, it will be deleted. This is in keeping with our Stay the Trail and Tread Lightly! policies.

Think of an off trail condition like this: If you think that it might be, it probably is. Please don't post it.

That is how brake based lockers work...they keep you from spinning a tire by applying the brakes to stop the spinning tire...

...instead of making the two sides turn together, so if one side looses traction, the other side keeps you going if IT has traction.

So, if a tire slips, its braked...

...if it keeps getting braked, you can't really go anywhere.

Better off road programs allow some slip, to gain some momentum, and avoid this stuttering paralysis.

REAL lockers, or even LSD, also allow enough TIRE slip to initially get going....with the Lockers making the 2 sides turn in unison, regardless of available traction.

:wink-big:

Nope, pretty damn flat, and there were others driving by w/o trouble.

:D

Its the type of traction control, they refer to it as electronic lockers sometimes...braking of the tires to stop spin.

A PML USED TO refer to a POOR MAN'S LOCKER...which was to yank the emergency brake or tap/hold the brake pedal to stop tire spin, and get the tires turning together again.

I still say a LOT of that Rangie's problems were because of tire selection. Range Rovers come with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros, which are all season street tires. Any little bit of slick mud would be like ice to those.

Amen.

There are reasonable limits to what a man and a machine can do...and, depending upon the man, and the machine, those limits are definable.

Some people want to test the envelope, and go right to the hairy edge, sometimes falling over by accident.

And some people just want you to hold their beer and "Watch This!!!"

The people who get into trouble are the ones who just do not know where the limits ARE, and are unprepared for the consequences.

Those who ARE prepared, install a roll cage, wear a helmet and 5 point harness, etc...so if they go over, they are prepared.

Those who are not prepared, are MOSTLY unprepared SKILL-WISE.

That means they don't know that they are in danger, because they do not have the skill to recognize the dangers, and, they don't realize that they are in danger until its too late, as they ALSO rarely have the skill to get OUT OF the danger.

As for taking a new truck out into the off road world, there are two schools of thought.

The most typical is that, as most people are horrified if their baby gets its first scratch...they procrastinate going out as long as possible, using whether its paid for yet as a break point, etc.

The least typical is to consider whether you'd rather wheel a new, reliable rig into harsh terrain, or, an older, less reliable rig....

...and, whether you'd like something that breaks to have a CHANCE of being covered under a warranty that's still in effect, or, a guarantee that it will NOT be covered, because the warranty period has expired.

Logically, it therefore makes no sense to wait for a rig to be older and less reliable to off road it.

EMOTIONALLY though, you need the cajones to DO IT.

:D

I consider this an offroad fail. This was in Harlan and one evening after a hard day on the trail I accidentally dropped something on the key fob that was laying in the floor board effectively locking the door.:censor: Of course I tried everything from coat hangers to a makeshift slimjim. This being out in the middle of nowhere I couldn't get in touch with Onstar to have them unlock it so this was my only alternative. My mothers Escalade. Moral of the story, always know where your keys are.

It boiled down to this we drove 3 hours minimum to visit a new offroad park and it was so tame we had to be thinking hard for it to be entertaining at all. There Hillclimb Contest was so easy we did it the morning before and just thought it was a haul road to recover stuck trucks. Im not here to advocate boring wheeling it is a TERRIBLE idea but when you wheel like we do than show up to a park that lame you have to make it interesting. and besides 99% of large mud bogs/ races are slop fests its the only reason there fun as mud by itself is extremely lame. If you want to flame me for saying easy trails suck then go ahead how dare I enjoy a challenge.

That's not only an offroad fail but a gene pool fail. NEVER SIT OR STAND ON A VEHICLE!

Lesson 2: If the front-end starts hopping, shut it down! That's a good way to snap CV's and grenade diffs.

Lesson 3: Find better friends and spotters. Notice how everyone wanted to help until they heard the snap? Then they all just casually walk away. When a member of your group breaks down, everyone should be trying to help.

Of course I'm sure he had OnStar so they probably air-dropped an axle for him along with a Hummer technician. :mocking:

X2 on the people riding on the front... Thats a great way to get people hurt or killed..
Looks like no one there had any business trying to spot let alone drive..
Cool thing about Xterras... We know the limits of our stock SUV's People get these Hummers or FJs and think there some off road beast... And they could be with a driver that knows how to drive.. And not thinking because it looks so bad ass that it will do anything.

Drake
06-03-2010, 07:04 AM
The front bouncing like that is one of the many reasons why IFS is not looked upon fondly for offroading. Basically it's a mix of traction and the vehicle weight. The front wheels are biting hard but they can't pull the rear which compresses the front suspension then once the traction gives way, the front-end hops up in the air. When this happens, naturally the front wheels rapidly accelerate in that split second and when the vehicle comes back down, the tires bite again which puts a massive strain on the cv's and diffs. If you stay in the gas long enough with it hopping you can rest assure you will be replacing something up front. It's how I've busted a few auto hubs but fortunately no axles.

Drake
06-03-2010, 07:10 AM

Drake
06-07-2010, 06:26 AM
In that guy's defense, Tub Rock in wet conditions is impassable. That's an obstacle at Gray Rock ORV here in Alabama. After rains or in damp conditions, the big boys come to that park to attempt that climb. It's a straight shot up hill and super slick. Very few make it without winching. That guy in the pink buggy is actually Tim Cameron who a lot of people have seen running "Jenny Craig" and "Fat Girl" (the names of his other rock crawler). The actual owner of the buggy did the paint scheme kind of as a joke because Wes Kean runs a flourescent yellow buggy. Those guys are a tight knit group and they will swap out driving each other's rigs all the time. Although nobody drives the nasty girl but Tim. lol

Here's Tim's Jenny Craig aka Nasty Girl(not so much of a fail):

Well I hate to post this but it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. No video which might be a good thing because it would probably make me cry. For those that don't know, this is an xterra built by Richard at Rockhumper Fabworx. The amount of time and money he invested in this build is absolutely insane. I've never seen an X with this much custom work done. Custom t-case cage, top of the line axles, gearing... I mean the whole nine yards. Then some rich f*** comes in and buys it for his 17-year old son. Nothing against the young guys here but if you're going to wheel, get a vehicle you can handle. It's obvious this kid got in over his head and the forums say that this kid also rolled his jeep prior to this. Story is he got hung up on a small obstacle and let it roll back and couldn't hit the brakes in time.

Truly a sad day for one of the sickest Xterras I've ever seen built:

Thanks to youtube recommendations I was able to witness this footage of ignorance. The guy claims he out climbed rockcrawlers on a hillclimb in his "badass FJ". Correct me if I'm wrong but if you don't actually make it up the hill AND you manage to destroy your front-diff and transfer case, that doesn't count as making it. Or am I mistaken? ;)

I know that was a little rough at the top, but really, is that all it takes to break an FJ??? wow...

I know that was a little rough at the top, but really, is that all it takes to break an FJ??? wow...

If you did the same thing with a second gen it would break too.. When he was gunning it up he had rpms wayyyy up and then his front lifts up and drops him hard on his front diff putting alot of stress on the diff thats high reving and the gears just broke..

Think about if you stick you hand into a fan, if it has enough force and your arm is stiff enough you could potentially break the fan blades or the internals..
Same thing with the diffs..

It doesn't surprise me that he blew it..

Drake
07-19-2010, 11:57 AM
He definitely had it hammered. You could hear him pegging the rev limiter several times. Once the front wheels went airborne, bad things were inevitable. The driver didn't appear to be very old. It would be fantastic if that was daddy's FJ he just destroyed.

I see lots of diffs breaking with imports. I am and always will be a fan of imports but my first offroad vehicle was a Explorer. I railed the shit out of it for 5 years and never broke a damn thing other than transmissions.

Drake
07-19-2010, 12:03 PM
I'll have to say that is one thing that the 1st gens xterras have other vehicles beat hands down. I think I've read of only one reported incident of a grenaded diff in a 1st gen. And I'm not so sure that I'm not confusing it with another vehicle.

LOL

So, did our drying it out work OK, or did you need to go to a laundromat and throw everything in?

:D

And, yeah, if you get any axle spinning and bouncing enough, and come down on one side so one side suddenly is STOPPED while the other is still rev'd like a dervish....the diff will explode.

The very SUGGESTION that a Ford Exploder won't do that is - well, ridiculous, as they are FAMOUS for it. (They are Ford EXPLODERS for a reason)

:D

On the trails, the FJ's are bit delicate, like the H2's and H3's, and the steering and front drivetrains break fairly easily.

In general, this is WHY I do NOT hit resistance under power, and rev it up to get momentum up, and then COAST into/over the obstacle.

I've done that since my jeep days, and to date, have never had a drivetrain breakage.

The only possible exception was a rear diff I blew in my HS PARKING LOT, doing a ~ 100 yard reverse burn-out to impress a girl (Which strangely enough, didn't impress her in of itself, but she was flattered enough that I'd reversed so vigorously to come back and check her out)

I'd have to disagree. The spotter is clearly telling the guy to go the other direction, and when the front end starts to come up off the ground, the driver just stays in it. As far as I'm concerned, that was 100% driver error.

At 00:10 into the video the spotter tells him to go hard driver's side (signaled by his right arm). He does it twice which STARTS the jeep out on the incorrect line. The spotter then tries to have him turn back into the good line. When the driver attempted to do this, his current line picked him up and put the spotter out of view so he had no idea what he needed to do since he was seeing nothing but blue skies.

The only fault of the driver (albeit a big one) was that he didn't give time for his spotter to relocate (if he had realized the driver couldn't see him) and stayed in the gas.

But that's my .02 as well.

Mostly I see Driver errors, several in a row.

The spotter DID gesture to the right (Screen view...), BUT that was when the truck was a ways from the hump on that side...and the contour of the hump DID indicate the best line was to swing out a little to our right, and then swing in to our left, to ramp the "V" more in line with the terrain.

When the jeep was at the point they needed to swing left, the spotter DID gesture to go that way...but, the jeep did not.

So, error one...missing a call

error two, not doing anything about missing the call

error three, continuing UP even though he couldn't see how much further up it would pick him...(Assuming he didn't notice the damn thing on the way over there...)/or, doing it anyway.

error four - not noticing the big hump in front of him

error five...staying on the gas even after he was unweighting...a clear sign to a sane person that they need to get OFF the gas, or, even hit REVERSE, to save it.

-----

Now, if its a newbie, and they were not ready for that trail, THEN, whoever allowed him to try it, and/or did the prep as far as spotter coord, etc...was ALSO at fault.

If the spotter was the guy prepping some newbie, then he is at fault for not doing a good job getting the driver ready for it.

As far as the spotting itself goes...the calls were there, and the timing was appropriate.

I did a time control to see what was where for each step...and the spotting was ok in of itself.

People make mistakes, it happens. Its part of the game.

For all we know, the guy who flipped has made one mistake in 20 years.

LOL

Its old, and, the narrator hasn't a clue.

Essentially, the accident occurred because "The brakes failed because the SUV weighed 2 tons".

How about it occurred because the person didn't know how to drive off road, and was faced with a situation requiring experience to handle...that they didn't have.

If they had crawled down it, they'd have been fine...but they let the speed build up, and then lost control.

I'm sick of every one who crashes saying "The Brakes Failed"...as their alibi.

Trying to straddle the ruts. didn't have the front wheels turned enough. It was stupid but everyone still talks about that day.

:mocking:
