: driveshaft noise
Ricer-X 05-17-2007, 06:19 AM sounds like its coming from the one closest to the tranny, it creaks every now and then, and i can feel it in the floor, sounds likea lube problem, i looked under there, and didnt see and obvious way to lube the u joints other than spraying it with something.
advice?
ggunn 05-17-2007, 11:02 AM I think I got the same problem, but only at low speeds (under 20mph).
Ricer-X 05-17-2007, 11:32 AM I Looked Again On Lunch And Theres No Grease Fittings, I Do See Gaskests Tho
supercharged 05-17-2007, 02:41 PM They are permanently lubed, like the steering linkage, when their done their done, Then when you get a replacement with a zert, its at the wrong angle to service. What I want to know is what the hell is the propeller shaft?
The owners manual refers to lubing it every oil change and if it has been submerged, on 4WD models. If they are talking about the slip yoke on the front driveline, it has no visible means of lubing
Anthony 05-17-2007, 02:59 PM The front driveshaft (actually called the "propeller shaft") has a grease fitting that takes a "needle fitting" on the grease gun. You can replace it with zerk.
JoshuaTest 05-17-2007, 03:26 PM I recently had to replace Ujoints on my 01 Frontier.... $15 for the lifetime lubed ones at the local parts house... they had greasable ones too... But i'm lazy, and would rather just have to replace lifetime lubed ones every couple years than lube the others on a regular basis...
Mine would make noise only at low speeds, but didn't look bad when i climbed under the truck... but once we pulled the driveshaft, it was pretty clear that the rear one was bad...
Not hard to replace, but kinda a pain banging the old ones out, and new ones in...
if indeed that is what it is.........
(do the xterra's have a "carrier bearing"?) the 98-00 frontiers did, and they where notorious for going out... - or does the X have a solid driveshaft tcase back?
Ricer-X 05-17-2007, 03:36 PM IVE ALWAYS CALLED IT A HANGAR BEARING, BUT YEA, WE HAVE A SEGMENTED SHAFT ALSO, SO, MY UJOINTS ARE NO GOOD?!?!
THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM FOR ME, WITH THE TRIP COMING UP, I NEED TO TOW THE 4RUNNER. KRYS CAR IS OUT OF COMISSION(HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK I JUST HAVENT REPLACED IT YET), WHO THINKS IT WILL LAST ANOTHER 2 WEEKS? I KNOW ITS A JUDGEMENT THING BUT MAN THIS IS SHITTY!!!@!!!!$%#$^y%

well you gotta get under there and see... but don't go chancing it... how mechanically inclined are you? do you have a vise?
Climb under and grab your drive shaft and see if it lets you rotate it at all.. it should be pretty stiff... if there is movement, defanately u joints... now i'm no X expert, since i'm ONLY driving a frontier.. lol but it sounds to me like that...
Pulling your driveshaft is EASY... if you don't have a vise, or don't wanna mess with it.. grab the ujoints at 10-15 each... (there is probably only one bad one...) and take your driveshaft to a shop and they shold only charge you one hour labor to do it, and it will only take them 5 min to do...
your 2wd right? buy some tranny fluid cause you will loose some.. lol....
Infact... just stop at a shop today and just ask them to look and tell you if you need ujoints... they would be able to climb under and tell you pretty quickly if thats it...
but common signs are....
1 - noise at lower speeds... and at take off...
2 - vibration or hum at higher speeds...
JoshuaTest 05-17-2007, 03:45 PM with a ujoint, there is no way to tell when it will go... and it can just go, or it can cause the driveshaft to fall out... and driveshafts aren't cheap like ujoints..
its a unsafe thing to wait on though because if it goes while on the road trip, it could take out other things with it.. driveshafts comming out have cause wrecks that kill people... so you defanately want to cure it right away... usually by the time a driveshaft is making noise that you can hear, its been bad for a long time... you just didn't notice...
Ricer-X 05-17-2007, 04:12 PM All Right, Guess I Gotta Get On It
JoshuaTest 05-17-2007, 05:19 PM make sure that is certainly what it is though... I'm just judging on whats been said... and i don't wanna pass on bad info if its something else...
but its a cheap fix.. and it happens to all... sooner or later.. lol
json3904 05-17-2007, 05:23 PM hey taht might be the noise i have been hearing ... i will look at mine and see whats up with it....
JoshuaTest 05-18-2007, 08:39 PM WELL.........
do we have an update yet??????
Ricer-X 05-19-2007, 05:34 AM the truck goes into the shop today, im swangin the pathfinder until i get the X back, i dont feel like chasing gremelins, i already have too much mechanic work to do tonite, i gotta do ALOT to the yota to get it ready for next weekend, leaf springs, sway bars, tbars, weld exhaust, seal airbox, change the tires, fix the camber, then a buddy is bringin his 93 pathy over for me to help him change the shocks and cv axle so he can come wheelin too. i wont have the time or energy on top of that to hunt for the prob with my X, plus i still got a warranty so off to the stealership
Ricer-X 05-19-2007, 06:33 AM OOO I MAY BE ABLE TO KEEP FROM BRINGIN IT INTO THE SHOP!!!
over the past 2 days ive done crazy things like ly in the driveway under the truck and have my wife drive it over me(yea im skinny) as i try to pinpoint the location of the sound. couldnt dot it. i hope its the hangar bearing, ive had someone mention it to me but i shrugged it off since ive already had my issues with that particular part. it may be going for round 2
Ricer-X 05-19-2007, 06:35 AM and if its the driveshaft, should i be able to feel it?
JoshuaTest 05-19-2007, 08:13 PM it wouldn't be the driveshaft itself, but the ujoints or carrier (hanger) bearing...
i've heard the carrier bearings where a pita, but i don't know for sure... ujoints aren't bad...
so whats the deal? X still has warrenty???? did you take it or not?
Basically you shouldn't really be able to turn the driveshaft back and forth.. with a bad ujoint, they sometimes have play... but not all the time....
its one of those things that hard to describe... if its under warrenty, just take it in to be sure..
Ricer-X 05-21-2007, 06:29 AM t'was the hangar bearing, white lithium grease, no more noise, that was saturday, drove 3 hours yesterday... still no noise
