Hey all, today i was rotating the tires on my mom's lexus gx470 (2004) and we had her all done an it was my friends job to tighten the lugs on the right rear tire. well he tightened one of them and then we took it for a spin.... felt the weird feeling and knew instantly what happened...

well atleast the tire didnt come off but i blame myself for not checking it. Well we stopped and jacked it up, tightened the lugs but the on of them got cross threaded big time. i cranked on it and snap! broke the thread off

still have 5 lugs on so its ok for now but what can i do?

please help!!

I don't know about the Lexus but generally you can just use a big hammer and a punch and push out the broken stud. Then you take the new stud and either pull it in using an old lug nut or pound it in with hammer.
I used to have a neat tool that looked a lot like a gear puller that let you remove/install the studs without using a hammer so you don't accidentally miss and mess something else up, like warping a rotor or flange plate.

Yep, they are cheap (like $2) and shouldn't be too hard. Sometimes you have to take a bunch of stuff off though, to get it out of the way to get to the back.

ok well i just got home from napa, they had everything i needed! got a stud and a new lug nut for $8.50. Now i just have to sneak a repair in under her nose! hopefully i wont have to pull an axle out.

thanks everyone for all the help! i really appreciate it

No, most likely will have to get the hub and rotor off though to replace it.

Most will also have a notch or a hole in the back to gain access.

I would only assume you would need a aligment as well. Kinda funny after all you were rotatiing her tires for prevent ueven wearand it turns out you've made it worse.. lol

Well its fixed now. i even did a write up cause the idiots at clublexus dont know their ass from a hole in the ground. took about and hour and a half cause i learned as i went but over all not bad.
Already aligned it. this all was done on the 23, so that is... tuesday!

here is the write up i did for em haha

Well didnt get much help on changing a wheel stud on here but I am a member at clubFrontier and clubx and they gave me some info. So i thought i would do a little write up on what i did to replace my broken wheel stud.

tools:
17mm socket wrench
cheater bar
gloves
3 in 1 oil
flat head screw driver
a punch( i just used a bolt to knock out old stud)
sledge hammer
string
new lug nut and stud ($8.50 from napa)
a large bolt, or two box end wrenchs( to use to tighten bolt : Step 9)
beer

1. remove tire
2. remove 2 bolts from back of caliper
3. hang caliper up out of the way, be careful not to pinch brakeline
4. remove 2 bolts holding the other peice of the caliper on the back of the rotor plate.
5. slide rotor off the hub.
6. turn key on, put in neutral, DO NOT PRESS ON BRAKE, and rotate the hub so that the broken stud is at the 6o'clock postion( at the very bottom).
after you put it back in park you wont be able to shift out of park until you step on the brake which you dont want to do while its off.
7. use a punch and sledge hammer to knock old bolt out.
8. get a kid or someone with smaller hands to insert the new stud into the back of the hub.(may have to use a screwdriver to pry emergency brake back a little).
9. use two box end wrenches and put space between the hub and your lug.
10. tighten beyond belief, stop everynow and then and put some lub on the threads.
11. it wont be perfectly level with the rest but will work just fine.

here are some pics. first is the broken stud and the second the new stud is at the bottom.

Keep an eye on that lug for awhile, it might seat some more after a bit of driving. Sometimes they can just get really hot when pulling them in and expand so it feels like its fully seated but once everything cools back down you might be try retorquing it.

sorry to resurrect, but i did the same thing today but in the backs with the drums, is the write up any different?

Nope, it's pretty much the same. You'll see once you get the drum off.

It will basically look like this (this is a disc/drum combo from an '05), but it's esentually the same for what you're doing.
