looking for some new tires for the X. have been reading the forum, and was wondering if some one could post more pic of the cuting you have to do to fit bigger tires. And what would be best trie for the X, looking for tires that are good for off road and on. would like some thing cheap too.....

Hi!

:D

OK - There's no such thing as the perfect tire on and off road, and making it a cheap tire doesn't actually help...so, to be fair, you have to explain your priorities.

As an example, the best off road tires for sand are not the best off road tires for mud...mud tires tend to get bogged down in sand, and good sand tires tend to get packed with mud and turn into slicks, etc.

The best dry pavement tire is a racing slick...if the road is wet, channels and sipes help...but the point is to maximize the rubber on the road, with as little void between tread elements as possible, for maximum road traction.

The best mud tires look like paddle wheels...very little rubber on the road, more like cleats for soccer or foot ball, etc...on the hard pavement, cleats suck...in dirt, they rock.

:D

Good traction on rocks or pavement is easier if the rubber is gummy and sticky...but, that makes the rubber wear off faster...so the tires don't last as long.

Good mpg is easier if the sidewalls deform easily, so less power is needed to make them roll....but that typically makes the sidewalls more vulnerable to rips and punctures, etc.

Sticky rubber that lasts longer requires more expensive rubber compounding, and tire carcass construction, etc.

So - Your priorities: (Maybe rate with a 1-10 for each choice, to show your balance...)

long wear vs traction

MPG vs resistance to damage

sand traction vs mud traction vs rock traction vs street traction dry, wet. snow...

street handling/braking vs off road capabilities

Range you'd spend to get what you want

:D

A huge number of people went with BFG AT ko's as their compromise, as they last around 75k, and are good on road and off, but are not as good on road as a highway tire, and not as good in the mud as a mud tire, rock in deeper snow, have better rip/tear puncture resistance than most AT tires, etc...but cost a bit more, but last longer, etc.

That's a baseline choice....where does what you want fall?

:D

Also - the size tire you want (15", 16", 17" etc...plus width and diameter, etc...change the balances too)

so i want some thing for on road, i only plan on off roading a little bit, and not though that much. like some oil trails ect, not rock pits, though it would be fun. im doing the pml so i'll be able to put bigger tires.

The PML doesn't make room for larger tires, that's what a BL does. :D

The PML improves your ground clearance...so do larger tires, but, the larger tires pick up the ENTIRE truck, the PML picks up the frame, and the BL only picks up the body, making ROOM for larger tires.

So - without a BL, you can do up to 32's...with a BL, 33-35's are possible.

Some trimming of plastic inside the wheel wells is required as well depending on your truck/tire choices....00-01's have more well plastic, 02-04's have less to trim.

For an '01 SE, 31's require slight plastic trimming, 32's require all the front well plastic to go bye bye, 33's don't fit w/o a BL.

Would you do a BL along with the PML?

What sized rims do you have...OEM 15's, 16's or 17's, aftermarket, etc?

Oil trails...? What type of terrain is that by you?...gravel, rocks, mud, dirt, sand? Mostly flat, or hilly/ledges to get over, etc?

As of right know im not going to do a BL, but by the end of summer i sould have one. i have 16', some mud and gravel.

Well, if you are going 16", after a (2"?) BL, you have plenty of options.

You don't give any details as to priorities, just that you'll be on mud/gravel.

Mud and gravel do well with paddle wheel treads, but those suck ON road...and you mentioned wanting it to be good on road, as you're mostly on road, etc.

So - Some best bets, depending on the unlisted info details that might sway things one way or the other, would be:

1. BFG AT ko's, 305/70/16 (Like a 33x12.5/16 equivalent size...) - Good on road, tough enough for most wheeling, aggressive enough for most mud/all gravel scenarios.

2. Cooper STT, 305/70/16 - A little less good on road than the ko, but more aggressive off road, and tougher.

3. Bridgestone REVO AT, 305/70/16 - A bit better on road than ko, but less aggressive and less tough off road.

4. General AT2, 305/70/16 - About as aggressive as the REVO, average on road, but somewhat tougher and generally less expensive than the REVO. (The AT2 is the only General tire that anyone likes so far, do not under any circumstances get any other General Tire, Generals universally suck)

:D

Remember to get 5 tires...the spare needs to be the same size if swapped on, (The SE comes with the LSD), to avoid blowing the diff, etc....

...and, if off road on terrain that killed your GOOD OFF ROAD tire, could your tiny oem spare get you back out?

:D

well i never did get the tires due to school, and how much $$$$ it is!!!! so i've got some money saved and am now looking for some tires...and it seems that not a lot of tires fit on a 16" rim. now im not a tire guy, and know just about nothing about tire sizes and what not, TJ it seems like you to have an 01 X did you buy new rims as we'll? should i get new rims so i might find a more compatible tire? now that i've had the X for 8 months i've been able to take it off-roading when up in Gaylord, MI. now its mostly what i know as oil trails, mud dirt and light gravel. and was thinking about something like this "http://www.tirepackage.com/partlists.aspx?plID=3357&ptID=100001" the Pro Comp All Terrain Tires.

hmmmm, well I own Pro Comp MUD terrains and have no complaints. I like them a lot, the actually handle really well on the street. They have held up to many elements as well. I have not done too much rock crawling but I am able to get up a lot of stuff with these as they are very aggressive.

All I am saying is that I really like the tire. With that, a reputation attaches itself. That means, IMHO, Pro Comp is a great tire. I am definitely considering 35/12.5/17 Extreme mud terrains in the future.

So, weigh your options like TJ was saying. BFG makes some good tires. Before my MT's I had BFG Rugged trail. I was pretty happy with the handling on and off road. They wore evenly and still have some meat on them. I plan on using them some time soon again that way I can finish them off and get them out of my closet. I like those tires.

I do not see why you are having trouble finding tires for your rims. I still have my stock rims on there and I did not run into any trouble with mine. They might be really "$$$$" because they are 16's. The larger the rim, generally, the more expensive the tire. I think it is a marketing ploy. You are getting less rubber but paying more.
