Hey all, I'm a new member but I have been prowling Club Xterra for a bit now.
I'm about to purchase an Xterra and I've narrowed it down to a 2006-2007 4x4 S or Off-Road Automatic.
Under $18,000 and 50,000 miles.
Main use would be short city commuting and towing a small boat.
I also hunt and never want to get jammed up and stuck in the woods.
Two Questions:
Will I be able to get an '06-'07 4x4 Off-Road for under $18,000 with less than 50,000 miles?
I will be going though swamp lands and soft sand, not rock-climbing, is there any advantage to having an Off-Road compared to an S? (both being 4x4)
Thanks!
As far as not getting stuck, the OR's primary advantages are the rear locker (A HUGE advantage), the larger stock tires (32"), and the more off road oriented traction control system, which would include hill descent, and better abilities to nibble its way through loose/slick terrain.
The reason a locker is so valuable in muck, etc (In addition to on rocks, etc...), is that in slippery goo, your tires tend to slip.
With an open differential, it is designed to use the outside tire to power you around a turn, while the inside tire coasts. Essentially, power goes to the FASTER tire...which, in a turn, is the one on the longer outside track.
Off road, this means that when one tire slips, it gets all the power, and the OTHER tire, the one that had enough traction to NOT slip..."coasts"...getting no power, and leaving you STUCK.
The locker, with the push of a button, lets you make the two sides turn in unison, so if one slips, the other one is still pushing you along...and you are not stuck.
The 4wd SE is very capable off road too, but, the OR is a BEAST.
So, if NOT getting stuck is a high priority, the OR is the ACE.
:wink-big:

Thanks TJ, thanks exactly what i wanted to know....
Also, is there any real valid reasons to avoid an '05?
