Ricer-X 04-11-2007, 02:12 PM what kind of spare parts does everyone carry when they wheel.
ive got a torsion bar anchor, and im picking up a tie rod assembly from nissan on friday.
alternator is on my list of "to get" what else should i have?
superrust 04-11-2007, 02:45 PM If I remember right someone mentioned on another post that they keep a spare airfilter with them. I'm still new to the whole OR thing but learning more from all the posts
supercharged 04-11-2007, 03:50 PM An alternator Riceman? How much do you have invested in that?
New or rebuilt with core charge.....
Anthony 04-11-2007, 07:23 PM Torsion bars, Tie rod ends and adjusters, Auto-hubs, Air filter, some wire, and some hose. Also, I have a spare alternator, but I don't carry it with me in the truck. I plan to add tbar anchors and adjusters to this list.
Ricer-X 04-12-2007, 06:11 AM i guess ima throw a stock tbar from my garage in the trunk too!
and pick up some wire

havent gotten one yet, but i plan on it, im pickin up the tie-rod assembly on monday. ive have the tbar anchor since december(i broke one in may 06 and almost had a real bad weekn stuck in the woods)
hey anthony, maybe this should be a sticky since these things are important to have while wheeling
Muzikman 04-12-2007, 08:57 AM On a normal local run I don't carry much in terms of parts. As long as I can limp it off the trail, I have AAA Plus which gets me free towing up to 100 miles.
I do carry a bunch of recovery gear, tools (including duct/electrical tape, silicon sealer, JB Weld (water weld), tire plug kit, zip ties, ratchet straps, and other things I am forgetting), air filter, etc.
If I am going to be away from the area, I have a Rubbermaid container that I carry the following.
Oil filter
Oil drain plug
5 quarts of oil
2 qts gear oil
1 Gallon anti-freeze (this isn't in the box as it won't fit)
PB Blaster
Silicon Spray
White Lithium Grease
Spare Alternator
Spare Alternator bolts
Misc nuts, bolts and washers (not to anything specific)
Fan belt
**Other stuff I can't remember)
As soon as they get here, I'll be carrying a spare front half shaft and tie rod adjuster and end.
supercharged 04-12-2007, 10:58 AM I wish there was an easy way to carry about ten more gallons of fuel
fatkid_UH-60 04-12-2007, 12:54 PM gotta agree that this is a great thread, albeit an expensive one...

Hehe, sounds like a few of you are darn near towing a spare X.
I need to get a tire kit and compact air compressor for sure.
Generally for the terrain I choose I pack more survival & comfort gear for the occupants than the X itself.
aznboihoy03 12-02-2008, 04:53 PM jeez u guys go all out, i just carry a shovel and some jumper wires, lol. ill be getting more supplies now that ive read what everyone else has just to be safe.
Drake 12-02-2008, 05:50 PM This is what I try to carry although my stock has since diminished after my last trip to Mountainside:
two sets of complete tie-rod assemblies
two auto-hubs
ratchet straps (can help you remount a tire if it pops off the rim... safer than ether too. hahaha)
jb weld
duct tape
electrical tape
zip ties
about 8ft of wire (can't remember the gauge off the top of my head)
wiring set with clips, splices, etc. etc.
I'm hoping to pick up a spare CV axle, BJ's and a tire plug kit.

DaveC 12-02-2008, 07:01 PM Yeah dude, spare clothes is a good idea...particularly this time of year. Good call. I keep meaning to pack some when I go off road...but I always forget lol.
Also, a couple of gallons of water usually finds its way into my rigs...whether they be used for emergency coolant, or drinking water, or to put out campfires, clean camp stove stuff, etc...
I don't care what the experts say about the 10 essentials, I know for a fact that toilet paper ranks right near the top!

I usually just leave in gym pants and 1 short sleeve shirt, 1 rain jacket, and water resistant pants just in case. Probably need to pack a sweatshirt in there for this time of the year....in case I get stranded. But otherwise all those items stay in my car at all times.

Seriously, the slimfast does its job...fills you up really good for a long while, tastes great and makes you feel stuffed!
Ricer-X 12-03-2008, 02:04 PM most dairy actually gives me mad gas, but my slimfast gas specifically stinks to holy hell
Keyz18 12-03-2008, 02:05 PM apparently, for Ricer, he'll need a spare gas mask if he brings his slimfast LOL

LACamper 06-15-2009, 06:33 PM Pardon for the newbie question: what's the big deal w/ alternators? Is this a standard offroad problem? Or is it Xterra specific? I've had ford trucks before- I've always been more worried about water pumps...
I've always packed a spare fan belt, coolant, water, Duct and electrical tape, a few fuses, a box of .45, and jumper cables.
rgallant 06-15-2009, 06:47 PM Hi,
Seems to be a location problem more than anything, too low in the engine compartment if you ford deep. I am in the the Pac Northwest and I have had no problems so far, but I avoid deep water where possible. But if you can get one cheap at the wrecker and it works it is not a big deal to carry.
Ricer-X 06-15-2009, 07:13 PM alternators generally have probs when they get dirty, not wet, if they are dirty they dont work as well, etc. and can fail
LACamper 06-17-2009, 08:46 PM My last truck had a low alternator (02 ranger). The only problem I had w/ water was the belt would slip and squeal...
At least the air intake on the Xterra's is up high!
NotClassyButClassic 06-18-2009, 09:02 AM I always make sure my mini fridge/cooler is well stocked before going anywhere :P Waiting 2 hours for a tow truck on a hot summer afternoon is a real bitch when you have no "refreshments" lol
Drake 06-18-2009, 09:30 AM I always make sure my mini fridge/cooler is well stocked before going anywhere :P Waiting 2 hours for a tow truck on a hot summer afternoon is a real bitch when you have no "refreshments" lol
Now that's what I call thorough planning. hahaha

Survivor Man is the real deal.... no cam crew and no help...
Bear Grylls has been seen staying hotels at night and then returning to the site to film the next day... and he has medical and other professionals on stand by for him....
Just sayin...
