: 3" SL New Wheel/Tire Rub Worry
CascadeWalnut 02-27-2010, 09:39 AM Hello All,
Here is my dilemma, I am planning on getting new wheels and tires. Wheels will be Crager soft 8, 16x8 with 5" backspacing. I was planning on going with BFG Mud terrain T/A KM2 LT 285/75/r16, I know there may be some degree of body trimming involved, and there was a good post on this forum on how to do this.
When I told my wife this she brought up a good point, with these larger tires (roughly 32.8 inches in diameter) will we have articulation problems during our offroading, and annual trips to Moab/Canyonlands Maze district. Her major concern was the larger tire would get stuffed up in the wheel well on difficult obstacles.
That being said another option would be the same tire, but LT 265/75/r16 which is roughly 31.6 inches in diameter. But will one less inch in diameter make that much of a difference?
Me: 3" SL, NO body lift. Will 32.8" tires stuff up into wheel well on articulation? Will 31.6" tire stuff into wheel well on articulation?
Thank you all for your support.
Matt
tylas1 02-27-2010, 10:03 AM it should be fine im gonna fit 32's under a pml 1.5 inch lift ! people use 32's on a stock suspension you might have to trim a tad but thats no big deal ! or time the tires will actually trim all by itself ! dude youl be fine ! hope this helps
BigDog107 02-27-2010, 10:06 AM do a BL
tameroflions 02-27-2010, 10:15 AM you will be able to stuff 33"s, assuming youre going perfectly straight. the body lift is used to help clear larger tires, suspension lift is to get more ground clearance. either way, you'll have to do some plastic trimming, but it would be drastically reduced if you did a BL. theres really not a whole lot of reason not to, just take a week and work on piecing all the parts together and take an afternoon to put it in, total costs around 70 bucks i think. might as well do it for 2" of lift for only 70 bucks. not bad. and then if you get the rear shackles from AC and crank the torsion bars, thats another 1.5" of lift for about 70 bucks, so thats a total of 3.5 inches of lift for 140 bucks, great deal. i say do that to get the best of both worlds and you will be able to fit 33"s easily. they will stuff just fine, anything bigger wont stuff, but 33"s will.
EDIT: missed the fact that you already have a SL.....do a BL and go w/ 33"s. it will give you more ground clearance and you'll be able to stuff them w/out any worries.

BigDog107 02-27-2010, 10:23 AM LOL I know that because I wanted those rims really badly....but theres no way they will fit on my truck without almost taking the fenders off...
CascadeWalnut 02-27-2010, 10:36 AM Alright guys, thanks for your help..
From your posts, its sounds like the only way to get around articulation interference with ~33" tires is to do a BL? I was hoping to avoid a BL at this point, and I was hoping for larger tires (for obvious off road applications). I haven't had any issues with the ~32 inch tires I have had on there, so maybe I will just stick with the smaller tire.
drbandkgb 02-27-2010, 05:15 PM 32s will be fine! Most people think 33s are the way to go.. and they are if you are looking for the Monster truck look and one more inch of clearance! but I see no issues with 32s..

Ahhh.... Thanks for the offer whisky, unfortunately this thread is a couple of months old, and I have already addressed the issue.
On the other hand I am always looking for people to go wheeling with, maybe you can hit me up next time you are planning something?
