Hello All:
I am new to the site and just looking around to find other Xterra owners like me. I have a 2003 Atomic Orange SE that is awesome! I have had the truck for about two months.

It has a few modifications along with a lift. I eventually will take it off road once I get up the guts! Until then I love the attention it brings me. I look forward to making new friends

Yes I am female

Oh my first offroad experience... Hmm, I crapped my pants, got stuck in a field (yes illegally), had to have two towtrucks pull me out, and tore up the transmission. It was my first vehicle (used 89 chevy pick up) and this all happened the second day I owned the truck!!!!!! Not fun, well at least not fun for my parents considering I was 15 at the time and they had to foot the bill.

Will post pics later after work. I would crap myself if I had an expeience like that too! My real first off-road experince aside from a field was this weekend @ paragon. My truck sat home and I just rode along. It was awesome! I took great pictures especially of all the trucks and quads stuck lol. Now I am debating whether to take my truck or not...

Welcome A Board!

:D

Newbies are always nervous about going off road at first....that's normal.

I always recommend that you do what you did, go along for the ride a few times to see what's what....and then go on a green trail meant for stock trucks (Even if you lifted and so forth already...), so that the DRIVER can catch up to the abilities of the truck.

Getting stuck is not a problem...we just pull you out, etc...what is a problem is breaking something...and the way you avoid that is by learning to drive off road.

The primary thing to learn is how to pick a line.

That means you look at where you need to go, and survey the terrain for a path that YOUR truck can take, to get there....w/o hitting its undercarriage on something, getting stuck, etc...

To be able to do that...you NEED to get UNDER your truck, and LOOK at what's down there, and become familiar with where your leaf hangers and diffs, and so forth, are...so that when you have to drive OVER something, you KNOW what parts of your underbelly will be WHERE, to be sure the things will miss you as you go by, etc.

You ALSO need to get the feel for what the truck can, and cannot do...in the beginning, people tend to either be too timid, or, too afraid others will make fun of them for "Chickening Out".

So, too timid rarely breaks stuff, but can result in not driving where you could have easily made it...but didn't know.

Too afraid of losing face can lead to attempting things you are not ready for, and geting into trouble.

The rule of thumb is to use the trail codes a a clue...if its a green trail, you can be pretty sure a stock truck CAN do it...that's how they made the trail, etc.

The other aspects come down to a combination of common sense, and experience....some vicarious. :D

Some basics:

Don't get sideways on a hill, try to keep the truck facing either up, or downhill...the doors should not be facing downhill...

Idle along the rocks, goose the gas if it might stall, let up if you feel resistance, like a big rock, rather than risk gunning it against a wheel chock...let it roll back, turn the wheel a bit to nibble a new route, and idle forward again, etc...that doesn't break stuff.

If you feel wheel slip, get off the gas, don't dig a hole with your spinning tire...try backing up, and taking another run with more momentum, or another route, etc.

If your tires straddle a rock, the rocks pick you up, and let you clear other rocks that you otherwise could not clear...use the rest of the rocks like ramps.

There's a bunch of tips like that...you'll pick them up with time...

In the meantime, HAVE FUN!

Thank you so much TJ! I seriously think if I decide to take it off road I won't be driving it lol. I will be the passenger. I am trying to build up courage! We were on green trails this past weekend. My boyfriend only had one problem and that was when he disconnected his sway bar the bolts broke. So he is ordering a quick disconnect today to solve that problem. Other than that he didn't get stuck or anything. In time it will see the mud until then I enjoy watching everyone else. I am thinking about going to Rausch Creek on the weekend of June 15th. I am going the following weekend to so will have to see how money is. My boyfriend has a 95 4Runner and it happens to be a 4Runner Jamboree I think. He says I have the better truck lol. The way my truck is how I bought it. I do like the look of the brush guard, but had no purpose for it. It has a Rancho air suspension but I have to get it check because I think either a hose is leaking or not hooked up. It doesn't keep the pressure. I'm not too worried about it though. I will get some pictures posted later today I hope.

Thank you too Nascar for the welcome!:musicgirl-big:

lol you funny! Good things come from philly..just far and few between. Yes we did win a home game and once we got a decent goalie we were too far behind. I don't knock the penguins. As of football I am a HUGE Steelers fan! Can't stand the Eagles never liked them and never will so how about that! Nice to meet you I'm Laurie http://clubxterra.org/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
