Hello.. I am shopping for a xterra. I love camping and flat out it seems like the best choice for me. I looked at a 06 with 82k priced at 10,995 today. Nice deep charcoal color, with tinted windows. even my GF said it look way sexy. But now I have a few quetions.

I currently have a civic.. so i know nothing of off roading. My long term goal is to get into some camping off the beaten path. . maybe some haling of dirt bikes. So off road capabilities are what steared me away from a rav4 or highlander and to the xterra.

But now I have a few questions.

How necessary is it to have a 4x4? If i don't get a 4x4 will i be kicking myself latter for it? Also .. 6 speed vs. auto when it comes to off roading? it seems like in the forums i see ppl mostly have stick. instead of a auto.

So if you ppl can give me some info. . i would greatly appreciate it.

We are both excited to join the xterra family.

One more thing.. is there any pointers for looking at late model xterra's? I am looking at 65k + so i am checking to see if timing belt has been changed .. any other pointers? thanks again for any advice. = D

Welcome from Ky!

I got a 00 SE 4wd (bought new 10 yrs ago) and it will pull just about everything. Still pulling trailer full of dirtbikes now. I don't do much offroading, but the 4wd sure is nice when we get snow and my wife doesn't feel comfortable taking her g35 out. That sounds like a good price (to me), but I'm sure you've checked the history (clean title, wrecks, etc) and service receipts would be a recommendation. I have always been a stick kind of guy, but got to admit, I appreciate the auto in my X. I still believe that 2 seater sports cars (like Z cars) should ALL be manuals, but again, that's just me.
Good luck!

auto vs stick is purely preference imo... i know some people who wheel on here with 2wd... but if you really want to off road its nice to have 4wd.
