So the tax refund is on the way, and the Harley is up for sale. I decided I wanted an Xterra, now I just need to decide which one. Within an hour's drive I have two dealers with 4wd Xterras for sale, one a 2000 model, one a 2003, both with about 100k on the clock, both in excellent condition, and the 2003 is about 3k more on the pricetag. I'll be buying one or the other within the next week for cash. Hmm...

Me: 37 years old, home in Mt Juliet, TN, married, no kids, one Doberman, one German Shepherd. Network Engineer, retired from the USAF (8 years Active Duty, 12 years in the Guard as a Combat Arms Instructor). Built street rods and custom bikes for years, decided I'm done with American-branded stuff. I'm working on starting a small tactical firearms school, and the Xterra fits the Mil-Spec image. Plus, this last weekend we were "snowed in" because neither of our cars is suitable for foul-weather driving, and I won't have that. I've been trolling here for a couple days, and this seems like the place to be for real X enthusiasts. Glad to be here.

There's a ton of X's listed, the challenge is finding 4wds. Most of them are either 2wd or way overpriced. I don't want a new one, because I plan on chopping it up, and it's definitely gotta be 4wd. Both of the X's I'm looking at are stock, so I don't know if I'll be ready to do any real wheelin' by the 20th. I may have it torn apart then. But I'm subscribed to the thread now, so if I can I'll join you.

2000 might give you more problems the distributor and exhaust manifolds were improved upon in 2002. But, square headlights are less feminine and its a whole 3K cheaper which would give you money to upgrade.

welcome. i guess it depends which you like better. can you sit in the 2003 and feel just as good as you do in the 2000 with 3k cash in your hand? are the similar in features/extras?

You will be pleasantly surprised to see what a stock x can do..... I took mine to coal creek last oct completely stock and had an absolute blast.... I will keep you posted if I see and Xterras around town.... I actually live in Hermitage and Im in mt. Juliet All the time!
And dave posted this earlier but it is a pretty good deal just ditch the sway bar mud flaps and step rails and ready to rock!

I would rather buy stock and build it up to my own specs.... IMO when buying a modified rig you know its been beat on!

Welcome - Have either had their timing belts changed? I'd sway towards the one with better service records.

weLCOME FROM ANOTHER USAF/GUARD MEMBER!! i AGREE CHECK ON THE TIMING BELT ISSUE, KINDA A BIG DEAL FROM A SERVICE STANDPOINT. I WOULD MUCH RATHER SPENDMY TIME AND MNEY ON UPGRADES INSTEAD OF
A TIMING BELT!!.

Timing belts will need to be changed no matter which you buy...
And like Xterror04 said Stock these will do alot... Mine was stock last year at CC...
Search the nerf bars and mud flaps on here... if you were to offroad it..
And the CC trip is so worth it just to meet others and see the mods

Good luck man....
