: What shocks to get?
David24 01-16-2010, 01:59 PM I am in need of some new shocks for my 2000 and was hoping to get recommendations. Are the Tokico's any good? I've used Tokico's on Honda's in the past and loved them but don't know how good they are for the X.
The car makes a squeaky noise only when its cold out, that's a sign of worn shocks right? Thanks!
Squeaks are usually bushings, leaves, etc...shocks are more like hissing or sucking noises, or silent.
If you have a 2000, you need shocks, the OEM's seem to give up the ghost at about 50 k or so.
The shocks that work amazingly well on the Xterra are Bilsteins.
The HD and 5100 series are the most popular, and I have yet to hear a disparaging word about them.
As a bonus, if you get the ones designed for the 3" suspension lift, they fit a stock height X (They work on a stock truck too, as they compress enough to fit).
While you are under the truck changing out the shocks, remove the rear sway bar, we've found it doesn't really help handling anyway, and, they've been breaking things, and causing damage to X's all over the country.
------------
If you want to test your shocks, bounce a corner of the truck up and down a few times, and then let go...it should simply rise to ride height, and settle, and not continue up/down.
David24 01-16-2010, 03:41 PM I won't be doing any lifting anytime soon so you're positive those ones made for 3" lift will work with no problems? Where do you usually get them from? I saw the shockwarehouse on here and they have them for a decent price. I did notice that they do not work with the sway bar anyway so removing it will be a good idea?
There are TONS of people who got them, and, as they compress very short, no one has had a problem.
The front shocks for the 3" lift are stock length actually, as with IFS, the travel is stiff bumpstop to bumpstop, same as stock...but the valving is better.
The rear shocks can extend ~3" longer than stock, which makes a large difference at the tire, given the angles involved, that gives a lot more WHEEL travel.
With the shocks for the lift, you get all the articulation of an X with a 3" SL, but stay at stock height.
IF you ever DO get a lift, you won't need shocks for it...and if you NEVER get a lift, you'll still have a better shock with a lifetime warranty plus better ride/handling.
:D
The rear sway bar should come off no matter what, they've been causing a lot of problems.
drbandkgb 01-16-2010, 04:00 PM Yes get it off the X asap! It will hit the shock.... If you look now you will see a dent in your back passenger side...
David24 01-16-2010, 04:05 PM Sounds good, thanks guys! Any tips on where to get them cheap though?
kbell2433 01-16-2010, 04:11 PM Here is where i got mine from. https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=435_413_109_273_534 And others have gotten them from here too.

Kona Hawaii 01-19-2010, 12:00 PM Hello, You may want to check out the KYB"S shocks....very reasonable price...great shocks too..
The front ends of the Xterra's KYB Mono shocks is the way to go!
Aloha, ...funny how you get "shock" sometimes...
russellt 01-19-2010, 01:14 PM Thanks, that is cheaper then the other place.
This seems like great information; I've looked at the listed 4x4 web site for 2005 front amd rear shocks, as my X is dire need of new shocks, but I only see rear Belstein's available; am I missing somthing?:aufkopfhauen-big:
David24 01-19-2010, 07:52 PM I was comparing the price to shockwarehouse.com
May they'll have them for your application...

They have Bilsteins...what else could you need?

goodoldays21 03-04-2010, 02:43 PM I got the KYB monomax installed all around..They are great, very stiff ride for the streets. Gives you more control on city straight aways and confidence on turns..I think the only problem youll find is that they stopped making either the front ones or the rear..I forget..Check them out!!

Lube your front sway bar bushings, that is where your squeak is coming from.
RockMozart13 03-04-2010, 04:10 PM i'm not sure about the bilsteins specifically, but i know sears hat the ranchos for a better price than you find anywhere online, and they install for free over $100. At least my sears did.

Yeah, but then you have that type of crappy shock value engineered for sears.
I mean, sure, you can get a stock length, old fashioned twin tube shock cheaper than a longer and sturdier state of the art digressive valved monotube shock....
...and you can get a salvage titled wrecked ford escape cheaper than your Xterra, etc....the question is, WHY?
:D
PS - Guys - the original poster got his answer and hasn't been back since.....so replies to his old thread are probably going to go into limbo land somewhere....
emmdock 03-04-2010, 05:12 PM This is my favorite kind of shock... The ones that come tomorrow! (Bils for 3" lift from 4x4parts)

killerbee40 07-30-2010, 10:01 AM Instead of starting a new thread I figured I would just ask here.
My 04 X rides horrible. It has the original rear shocks and some Ranchos on the front I installed in 08. I never offroad and dont plan to ever lift/lower or anything fancy. I just want it to ride comfortably. As of now even the smallest bump in the road I can feel. If I go over something like railroad crossing it sounds and feels like my dashboard wants to fall off.
I want to the 4x4 link in this topic. Some people said the 3" Lift ones will work, but the sight has a seperate one list for 2WD, which is what I have(yeah I know huh). Will the 3" only work with 4WD?
Also do I need to think about replacing anything else to improve my ride? Swaybar end links, tierods, ect.? I have 85K miles in it BTW.
drbandkgb 07-30-2010, 11:42 AM 3" shocks will work on 2wd or 4wd... 4x4parts is some what confusing but they were the cheapest Ive seen on shocks... I got my rear Ranchos for 97$ including shipping
killerbee40 08-02-2010, 07:57 AM I called 4x4parts and they said the 3" will work on a 2WD front but not the rear. I just ordered the non lift ones on friday.
