: Love Bug Damage!?!?!
I am buying an 05 xterra on monday. there is some discoloration on the grill/front bumper. the dealership says its love bug damage (we are in the southeast: AL GA FL) I don't care about it because I'm sure I'll put my own battle wounds on it and such but I am just curious as to how and of it can be covered up or fixed or what not. http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3635&stc=1&d=1263573041
spray paint is your friend
Drake 01-15-2010, 10:38 AM That looks more like oxidation of some sort more than their "love bug damage". Probably from someone using some type of chemical to clean bug residue off and didn't bother to check whether or not it would harm/discolor the plastic.

Cyclemut 01-15-2010, 02:33 PM Dustin is right, that's discoloration from a cleaning agent. I did that to my wife's X. Now I have to Fusion it.
higher4hockey 01-15-2010, 03:47 PM the south never ceases to amaze me.....there really is a bug called a love bug ?
Drake 01-15-2010, 03:55 PM I've lived here my whole life and that's the first I've ever heard of a "love bug".
I call shenanigans.
TimRich 01-15-2010, 04:42 PM No sir there are love bugs and they are a pain in the a$$...

Swordfish 01-15-2010, 08:36 PM ewww, bugs.
HAHA yeah love bugs are a pain in the ass and if you live in AL GA and mostly FL the migrate around spring or so. they're called love bugs because they attach to each other when they mate and fly around. they get on everything and yeah I agree with the cleaner damage. they are really acidic though so I'm sure with enough of them and a powerful cleaner that someone used in a panic to remove them etched into the plastic.
wait I think march is a little early i think its sometime before fall. I've lived in AL most of my life and never remember when they come they just swarm everything.... its like the south has two things that take over everything kudzu and lovebugs

That's the only reason I clicked on it. My wife and I own 2 classic Beetles.
FL Backpackonwheels 01-16-2010, 09:06 AM Seems like we get them twice a year down here. Muy importante to get them off as soon as possible to prevent damage. I hate having to drive long distances at night during the love bug season; they can be so thick its like driving through sleet.
As someone else said, you can easily spray paint the grill. It will look better than new.

chainring 01-16-2010, 02:11 PM cboy's right. I lived in south Louisiana years ago and those things would swarm by the millions. They look kinda like mosquitos, but they don't bite. My X was originally from MS and had bug etching in the bumper. Painted mine w/ spray on bedliner. No more rock chips!
XterraRed 03-26-2010, 07:50 AM How can this thread be a letdown? It involves sex.
Granted it's with nasty awful bugs.
I experienced those for the first time earlier in the year. We drove through a wall of them at some point and had to use special soap (immediately) to remove them. I was told that you don't want to leave them on there.
I have a feeling my car is going to get a LOT of washings.
I can't believe how much damage those little 'buggers' can do to a car. It's a CAR vs. a bug for petes sake!
