Newby here, rather an old(age wise) newby here. I have owned three Frontiers and now I have purchased a 2001 SE 4x4. Very clean vehicle with only 54K on the clock. Anyways hello to all. I do have a question, but not sure if this is the right forum to ask it. Is there some sort of heat shield around the manifold somewhere that has a tendency to vibrate/rattle when accelerating with a cold engine and stopping when the engine warms up? Okay, hello again.I am looking forward to being a member here. Thanks

Welcome to CX!
As for your question, is it coming from the engine bay or beneath the engine (like beneath the firewall)? I think there is a cat/shield beneath the firewall but not 100% positive.

The rattle/vibration does seem to be coming from underneath the motor, and it tied to excelleration. The faster the excelleration the increase in the noise. Just sounds like something to do with the exhaust, then when the engine warms up good the noise is not there anymore. weird.

Sounds like it.
I had a issue with the heat shields after my wheeling trip....it would beat my skidplate to death by rattling against it and it would sound like a piss moaning half dead cow in painful agony everytime I put it in reverse....finally took it off and never had a issue with it again....I've hit the accelerator pedal hard and etc after taking it off, no issues either.

Upon more examination of the rattle noise problem with my X, I dont believe its a heat shield making the noise. I belive it might be something in the drive line.
If you are in park or neutral and rev the engine it does not rattle at all. If you put it in drive and accelerate then you get the rattle. The more you accelerate the louder the rattle. Once it changes into 2nd and 3rd the rattle is reduced. And once the engine warms up there is no rattle at all. Anybody know the transmission and transfer case well enough to venture a guess. thanks
