: trailer wiring ?
troutking 03-09-2007, 07:44 PM I just installed a reciever hitch with no probs but I'm confused on the wiring. I also bought the replacement harness wich I thought would just plug in according to the directions. It shows a plug just hanging there to plug it into, but I cannot find that plug on my truck. Am I missing something. I have an 03. The package says 00-04. Please help!
json3904 03-09-2007, 10:45 PM you cant really see the plug but if you follow the wire back, right behind the hitch is the plug..... i will take a pic in the morning and post asap so you will see it!http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h255/jsongrl/General/100_1383.jpg
troutking 03-09-2007, 11:24 PM Thanks Jason I knew you would know. Actually I orderd everything from etrailer.com per your recomendation in another thread. Thanks, great price and quick service. I did some more reserch and found that some early X's with manual trans. did not come with trailer wires and a whole different harness is required. I hope this is not the case with mine.
json3904 03-10-2007, 12:28 AM WELCOME like i said, if you cant find it i will post a pic of mine so you can see where it is located. hope it helps.......
json3904 03-10-2007, 10:36 PM here are the pics i took today...... hope they help........

troutking 03-11-2007, 12:08 AM Thanks I truly appreciate it but I looked over and over, ran my hand all over in there even dropped the spare tire and I just can't find it. From what I've read only some early 2000 X's with manual trans. did not come with it. Mine is an 03 with manual. Maybe it's an xe thing. I'll look again tomarrow but I just don't know. I'll ask at the dealership on monday.
json3904 03-11-2007, 12:17 AM alright sorry about that ..... i havent heard anything about the manual not coming with it but you never know
troutking 03-11-2007, 12:24 AM What year is yours and do you have man. or auto. And what side is yours on, I can't really tell from those pics. Thanks.
json3904 03-11-2007, 12:43 PM i have a 00se auto, and the plug is on the pass side.
troutking 03-11-2007, 02:24 PM Well I am convinced it is not there. I looked and looked, fallowed every damn wire and nothing. Someone with an 03 with a manual trans. has got to be out there who's been down this road. I guess it's to the dealership on Monday.
json3904 03-11-2007, 05:52 PM Sorry about that maby they have the kit at the dealership for it.
troutking 03-18-2007, 12:45 PM So I went to the dealership and as I suspected theydidn't seemto know much. He called Nissan and they gave him no help. He found a wiring harness the same one I found on the intenet, #999T8-KL000. It said it was for 2000 and later Xterra with manual trans. It plugs in inbetween each tailight and routs under the truck to the hitch. The only problem was the 6 pin connectors were not the same ones I had. I think they changed them for 03, but there is no harness made specifically for 03. I can only figure that not enough people were buying a 4cyl. 5spd. Xterra to tow a trailer so nissan didn't bother. The harness I got was even discontinued. Anyway I just cut of the connectors and used some in line quik connects and it seems to work fine. Knowing what I know now though It would have been much cheaper to just buy relay modual and run my own wires. The nissan kit was $75.
json3904 03-18-2007, 10:26 PM damn sorry to here that ..... well i guess post some pics, so if others run into this problem.....
slipbobber 06-05-2007, 11:51 AM i have a 01 went to buy the harness to plug into to work my boat lights. they have no idea either. also looking at yours i am confused i have 3 plug ins inside my box. which do i use?

ke5kqc 04-08-2009, 02:23 PM I have an 06 auto and can't find my plug can any one tell me where it is??????
johngraves2 04-08-2009, 02:44 PM OK I dont hae a picture so I will do the best i can do with words:
if you stand behind the X and look at your trailer hitch and spare tire, then look to the passenger side.
Lay on your back and get under you X on that same passenger side you were just looking at.
Now in that area under the X like directly under your cargo area, to the right of the spare tire (as you lay on your back and look up) you should see a little grey cap thingy sticking out. It will be close to the frame and right against the floor board. (see the picture that was posted above).
When I bought mine it had the end of a plug sticking in there so it would not fill up with crap as you drive. You need to take that plug out and put the one for your wire harness in there (obviously they shoud look the same)
If you look at the wire harness you bought you sould be able to find something under there. The harness will plug into something, meaning that you are holding the male end (if that helps you find it).
As far as if the manuals have it pre wired, i do not know. I donot think tha they came pre wired, but maybe they did.
Ke5kqc - The 2nd gen models (like yours) has it on the opposite side.
If you guys look at courtesy nissan in there accessory section for your year they have instructions on how to instal the harness.
johngraves2 04-08-2009, 02:49 PM for a second gen model: http://www.courtesyparts.com/images/n50/inst/html/999T8-N5005_pg01.html
and for the 1st gen go to page #248 on the PDF thingy at the top: http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/owners-manual/nissan/2001-Nissan-Xterra.pdf
ke5kqc 04-08-2009, 03:37 PM thank you
