MY 2005 XTERRA STARTS, BUT……

A little background;
I am the original owner, the truck is stock and has 88,000 miles, and has been properly maintained. It is a 2005 2WD XTERRA and has not been abused. My problem began yesterday and it happened out of the blue. So far it has happened four times.

Here is what happened:
Once while driving at 40 MPH and three times sitting stopped in traffic,
the engine began to run rough, like it was on 2 or 3 cylinders, lost power (obviously), no backfiring or sputtering, check engine soon light was flickering on & off. The problem “fixed itself” after about 30 seconds. I also found that if I switched the ignition off and then immediately started the engine again the problem was gone as well. In every instance the check engine light remained off after the problem was resolved. When I got home last night I disconnected the battery in case there was a spurious signal or glitch. This had not effect as the problem did occur again today. I have done nothing else diagnostically…I do have an idea what the problem may be based on past experience, but I would like to hear what someone else who is unbiased has to say on the subject. Any ideas?…..Thank you everyone in advance.

Could be misfires..hard to say. To be honest the best thing to do is pull the codes when something like that happens as the codes can point you in the right direction, if not tell you exactly what's wrong.

Thanks dfwxterra.
Will a code be stored even if the check engine soon light did not stay on?

Yes... they stay in the system for like 30 or 40 key turns if I remember right

How is the throttle response when this is happening? Sporadic or full power?

Sounds like a fuel issue. The blinking light is usually indicative of a misfire. It might take a bit to store a generic misfire code. Disconnecting the battery didn't help. It wouldn't store a specific cylinder misfire if it is a fuel issue, as it would effect the whole engine's running, not just one cylinder.

Thanks drbandkgb & cyclemut

I do not have a code puller, but I'll see what I can do about getting the codes pulled. I think AutoZone will pull them for free.

There is no throttle response...I mashed the pedal and the engine did nothing & the RPM's did nothing as well. I was thinking fuel issues as well. With 88,000 miles it would not be a surprise if the fuel pump was starting to go bad. What do you guys think?

After you pull the codes, please post them in this thread so we can see what you got.

Thanks dwfxterra

I will post them once I get them pulled (hopefully tomorrow) and I will update everyone. Right now it's time for bed, sunrise comes early.

I will keep everyone posted.

My thoughts:

a) electrical short - possibly effecting how the EFI or the fuel pump works

b) fuel pump is on the fritz and may need replacing
