Hey guys,
Just joined the forum so I can do some research on the Xterra. I've decided I need an upgrade from my good ole' '97 Nissan Harbody 2wd to something with 4wd. I'm pulling a 5'x8' trailer w/atv on top through the woods and sometimes its difficult after it rains and everything is muddy in these swampy areas. I've had to disconnect my trailer and drive the truck through, then use the ATV to pull the trailer out of the mess. Kinda sucks...
I think I'd be ok with the X or S version, but from what I read it seems like the locking diff isn't available unless I get the manual tranny (M226).
Any experiences pulling a trailer offroad with the Xterra? Thanks.

I pull a landscaping trailer on a regular basis and have had no problems. The trailer is really a motorcycle trailer and have pulled it through the woods a few times with my bikes in it and never gotten stuck. Mine is an OR 2wd...i know doesn't make too much sense but I liked it better than the X or the S and it was Black so I bought it. BTW through the woods with the 20s and street tires...not bad. hope this helps you, definitely get the Xterra.

I have a 5x8 trailer I pull with my x and have never had a problem. I haven't pulled it through the woods but I have used it to put in and pull out my jet ski from the lake. This was from the shore and not a boat ramp. I had all 4 of the X's tires in the water and had no problem yanking it out. You should be fine... :)
Actually the locker is available only in the Off Road trim which can come with either an auto or manual tranny, though the manual tranny OR seems very rare.
KJE300, if you only have 2wd you don't have an OR however someone could have put the Off Road signage on as they sell it in the parts store. As far as I know the Off Road trim only comes in 4x4 with the e-locker, skid plates, different rims & larger tires and the bilstein shocks.

Sorry bro but you are wrong because I bought it new from the dealer. Has the different rims(Sold them), bigger tires, the bilstein shocks, and skid plates. The 2006 offered it in 2wd. Look at my pics before I changed the wheels and you will see the off road tires that came stock.
I'll admit my knowledge of the X's factory options are only solid from 2008 onward when I started shopping for one so I'll defer to you on that point.
The OP hasn't stated whether they are looking at a new or used X, so I was just assuming new and wanted to clear up the confusion that the e-locker only came with a manual tranny, which it doesn't and as far as I know from 2008 onward only comes on the 4x4 OR packages.
