New to forum. I have a 2000 Xterra, 5-speed, 4x4. When I shift gears, mostly when it's from 1st to 2nd, I hear some strange grinding, whining noise. I've had the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder replaced about 3 years ago. Does anyone have any clue what this noise can be? Trans? Clutch? Thanks to anyone with info!

When does the noise happen? Pushing in the clutch? Letting out the clutch? Moving the gear lever? etc?

It happens when the clutch is let out and is not engaged in any way. I can push the clutch in, put it in neutral, push clutch in, then back in gear and it quits. I'm just worried that something is wrong, bad wrong!

I'm a bit confused. Does it do this:
When the clutch is disengaged (pedal down)?
When the clutch is engaged (pedal up), and transmission is in neutral?
When the clutch is in the process of engaging/disengaging (i.e. while the pedal is moving up and/or down)?
If it sounds like a metal-on-metal sound while shifting, it could be the throwout bearing.

Ok, I have spend some time really listening to the noise and when it happens. Its when the clutch is pressed down and I'm shifting. It sounds like a whirling noise. From what I have read, I am thinking the throwout bearing.

Sure sounds like a throwout bearing. May want to check if it was replaced at the same time as the clutch.

What sucks is the clutch master and slave cylinder were replaced by the dealership. Nice that I can trust them to do a good job!
