: How true is tirerack reviews? Looking at the Firestone Destination A/T
goshgo27 12-06-2009, 12:52 PM Hey All,
I need new tires for my 06 Xterra. I still have on the stock 265 75 16 BF Goodrich Ruggard Trails. They treated me ok over the last 50K but they have really bad reviews on tirerack. I really like an aggressive looking tire and now that I have new babies on the way, safety is important (and cost). I tow decent size boat as well. The Destinations look tough in the picture but I read surveys that say they are not. Does anyone know what they look like compared to the stock BFGoodrich's? Any suggestions on tires would be much appreciated.
Those Wrangler Duratrac's look really cool. Does anyone know how they drive in snow?
thanks
Rich
TaylormadeXterra 12-06-2009, 01:07 PM Duratracks are rated well in the snow, they even have the mountain snowflack symbol. Visit this site for some real tire reviews. www.offraoders.com. Also if you are set in staying with an "AT" then also look at the procomp xtreme AT. Inexpensive and really agressive. Also of course there is always the BFG AT KO.
goshgo27 12-06-2009, 02:53 PM Thanks for the info, I will check out the procomps for sure. BFG AT KO's are my favorite but a little expensive.
Thanks again
Roschili 12-06-2009, 02:55 PM I have a set of AT KOs and love them. Definitely worth the money if they make it even close to 60k miles, and most people get that and more from them.
andypaintshomes 12-06-2009, 03:16 PM I just bought the GT Radial Adventuro ATIIs and love them...paid $436.00 out the door for 4 of them...Nice agressive tread, got 4 inches of snow here last night and they were great. I believe they are a 50,000 mile tire...for $436 I dont think you can go wrong.
AZ-Ted 12-06-2009, 03:28 PM BFG AT KOs FTW!!!
265s or 285s w/melt mod
k-man 12-06-2009, 07:31 PM I have the Duratracs on my 01, got um for a little over 400 on tirerack, so far i love um, great on road wet and dry, just waiting for a chance to try um in the the white stuff. Cmon snow!!!!!

vandebogart 12-06-2009, 09:07 PM I've had 265/75/16 Firestone Destination A/T's for over a year now and have put over 15 thousand miles on em. they still look brand new. i've put them through muddy roads, rocks, icy roads, and snow and i havent had any problems. Earlier this year we got around 9" of snow over night and the tires did great :)

BigDog107 12-06-2009, 09:13 PM I hear good things about the Destination ATs.
Tire rack reviews must be taken with a grain of salt.
The posters are VERY subjective, and, the tire ratings used are not very relevant to our purposes.
For example, if someone was on high speed, hwy type tires, and got stuck on a patch of wet grass or a dirt driveway....and got a set of all terrains....and didn't get stuck, they post that the new tires are unstoppable beasts off road, and the best tires they ever had, etc.
Conversely, they might be SHOCKED AND DISMAYED at the horrible handling of that same set of AT's, compared to their previous high speed track tires, and so forth.
Some people get the skinniest, cheapest tire that fits the truck, sometimes even TOO light, as in too low a load range for the tire pressure on the truck's placard, etc... and then complain the tires had no grip, etc....but THEIR version of the SAME tire might be different than YOUR version of the same tire.
So a LOT has to do with the EXPECTATIONS and past experiences of the reviewers.
That's why for the same tire, you'll have it rated all over the place.
:D
aced411 12-07-2009, 07:46 AM I hear the retail version of BFG Rugged Trails are a lot better than the ones they put on new vehicles. I can't say for sure, I didn't have them long. I have BGF A/T's, which even though I prefer them I think they are a bit overrated. I get better performance from the Toyo Open Country A/T's on wet and snowy roads...unfortunately they don't look as beefy as the BFG's. if you're not planning on doing a lot of off roading I'm sure those Rugged Trails will be just fine for all weather conditions, including snow.
Kona Hawaii 12-10-2009, 02:49 PM Hello, Tirerack...excellant to deal with...order KYB A-just-shocks...deliver to Hawaii total cost under $100 including delivery...(two for the rear )
Napa in Hawaii...wanted $76.00 for one (each) and we would have to pick it up too...
Tirerack...seems to have great prices for the KYB shocks..
Aloha,
PS: Lava rocks and sand beaches..rocky and dirt roads...alot of this is experience daily on the Big Island of Hawaii..for hunting and shoreline fishing...BFGS AT,Muds, Pro-comps AT,Muds...most popular among us guys here..!
and it does snow on Mauna Kea mountain..if fact there is snow" NOW" on top..13,796 feet...50 miles from my house to the top..one way..and we go there at least once a year to play in the snow too...
Off Road in NY 12-11-2009, 06:33 PM I bought a set for my 09 OR X after 3K on the Rugged Trails...now those are a horrible tire!
I have been extremely pleased with the Destination AT and highly recommend them...I've had them in light mud, 7" of new snow and heavy rain...just great tires and a good price. I think Tire-Rack nailed it on this one!
In fact, I like them so much I just put 4 on my work truck - 08 FJ Cruiser...great tire...especially compared to BFG Rugged Trails!
Bennyboy42 12-13-2009, 02:42 PM Check out Nitto's Terra Grappler. Theyre an AT that look pretty aggressive, and in my experience handle really well in snow, mud, and on wet and dry roads.
