ITS NOT MINE! so dont worry i just cant bring my self to join a jeep forum after the other forum bashed me for not driving a heep... so the thing runs like crap it coughs black smoke threw a hole in the exhaust so im trying to figure out if it has a timing belt or chain and if its a interference engine or not. if its a non interference engine and had a timing belt and its gone it would explain the way it sounds (like misfiring cylinders) its a v8 and thats all i know about the heep. google has been hating me the past week...

^^^ha ha^^^ love the advise. Well i don't know anything about heeps but if the timing belt/chain was off or broke it wouldn't run at all. As for the black smoke, that's fuel. Sounds like a bad misfire to me. now what could be the cause? I'm referencing my motor. Don't know if its the same with the heep motor. maybe a bad head leak, cracked or warped head or block. maybe a bad dist. (if it has one) bad plugs. bad wires. Are there leaks on the ground? Is it drinking oil or coolant? i'm really just throwing things out there cause i have no clue.

the head light fliud might be low. That could cause black smoke.:aufkopfhauen-big:

yeah we plan on getting rid of this heep as soon as we can get her a new ride. we have been looking at 4 door pickups. and with the pick up i can turn the x into a trailer queen ;) and i found out it has a timing chain. the reason why i asked a friend had an old mid 70's cugar where it was a non interference engine and the belt broke. it would run but like shit.

its a non interference motor from what i remember.....prob the 5.2 unless its a limited with the 5.9, anyway i would get it scanned they have alot of sensors that may not throw a CEL.......if nothing comes up it sounds like its out of time, either from a misfire from a bad plug/wire or from the dist, black smoke is unburnt fuel....those jeeps were a pain to work on...the 4.0 is so much better IMO......check all the plugs and wires they are probabally fouled up either way, then just start small and try not to spend too much lol

probably the 5.2 magnum 318 motor. great motor.
check plugs and wires first

was a good motor...tho when they have issues, in my experience they tend to be tempermental and a pain to fix

Not sure if you've figured this out, since it's been a whole week and a half...but at higher mileage, Chrysler's timing chains on the 3.9s/5.2s/5.9s and Viper/Truck V10s tend to get enough slop in the chain and wear on the sprockets to skip a tooth or two and put the cam out of time with the crank.
It's not an interference engine, as was previously stated, so you're not going to trash any valves/pushrods/rockers
Timing cover and chain/sprockets is kind of a pain in the butt job, but it's not DIFFICULT...just got a lot of crap in the way.
Good luck
