: My gf's AWESOME ride

So, here's my girlfriend's (of 6 years) classic automobile. It's the third one she's owned (actually a combination of the third and forth, with parts from a broken down jeep) and it's in the best shape of any of them so far.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the 1987 Chrevrolet Chevette 1.6L Scooter!

22 years old and only 60,000 miles, bought for $200!

The little bit of broken moulding on the front drivers corner of the bumper occurred in our parking-lot when a GMC Sierra caught the corner on his passenger side while pulling out.

The little tank carved $3000 worth of body damage from his front wheel-well to his rear. The chevette sustained damages in the form of a small piece of broken plastic.

I wanna modify it, parhaps even supercharge it! (I think it needs a little hood cut-away and charger sticking up :D) Or tear the drivetrain out completely and rebuild it with a camaro V6.

Ain't she a beauty?

Tint the windows, paint it flat black, black out everything

The paint it's sporting now is sun-faded flat-black. It could use some touch ups, especially the rims.

I like the tint idea.

I was also thinking of more rake and rear tires a little larger than the front.

(Hey Steeze, did you know there's pics of your chopped rig on the Canadian Nissan Truck Club forum? Lot's of folks up here have been drooling over your work. Kudos man.)

So do you have to pull it back to make it move?

So do you have to pull it back to make it move?

Lmao

You have to talk nicely to HER, and be patient, especially in the winter.

What forum are u talking about?

Just a Canadian based Nissan 4x4 club forum, CDN-NTC(dot)ca. One of the other members posted a pic of your rig, 'cause it's awesome, and I just thought you'd like to know there's folks up here admiring your handiwork.

So, on further investigation, it seems like an engine swap is the way to go on the little go-kart. I managed to find some links to Chevette performance parts (I know, I know...Chevette performance?? Lmao), but a decent Edelbrock carb is $1500 and a new camshaft kit is $350...So screw that. I'll just have to wait till I can get my hands on a used 4.2L or 4.6L V8 (A 5.0L is a bit heavy)...and maybe a ford 9" rear end.

And then it's off to the local race track, to kick the crap out of the rest of the amateur tuner-compacts.

I'd like to see a front-wheel drive 1.8L civic try to keep up on the short track.

It's built on a ladder-frame...perfect for a mini-racer.

I just talked to my boss and he owned one back in the 70's.

He was telling me about that they used to this for off road snow rallies in europe and at the time he couldn't figure out how it was actually winning races as one of the only non supercharged engines (stock engine). Come to find out there is an intake mod that will increase power significantly!

I say put headers on a update the intake.

I honestly don't think I've driven a car that's more fun in the snow than the Scooter. Don't get me wrong, my X is a blast in the snow, but the chevette is so small, and low. It drifts perfectly, and you can have it fully sideways then recover without crossing the lines for your lane. Every year, on the first heavy snowfall, we're both waiting axiously for the roads to get covered so we can go play in the 'vette.

I found the link for the headers, but I wasn't aware of an intake mod. Thanks for the heads up man!

My boss said he got like 20hp extra out of it. I am skeptical of that. But for the Chevette to be beating supercharged european cars in rally races there must of been something right.

I was wondering about the engine internals as well...It's such a simple engine...just a lump of steel with some pistons. I was wondering if I could maybe bore it out and plane the head. It would need a stronger head gasket, but the parts can all take the strain.

This thread has inspired me to start looking for a beater like Chevette so the X doesn't eat up all my gas budget.

200 for real man I would pick something like that up in an instant.

I had 2 of those growing up (back in the 80's). They were actually a blast. We beat the crap out of those things and just couldn't kill them, lol

I saw a tubbed 'vette at the Woodward Dream Cruise about 10 years ago. When you looked in the back window, there was about 4 inches between the tubs. It looked a lot like this one but less of a trailer queen. I love those things.

Here's another sweet pic.

Well done, guys. Now that the girlfriend is thinking of getting something newer, I wanna make it a project car.

They're fun little cars, as long as you can get past the total lack of all technology or creature comforts. They're bare-bones mechanical. So it's nothing at all like modern vehicles.

The tool kit that we carry in the vette consists of a crow-bar, a socket set, a hammer, vice-grips, and a coat-hangar. You can pretty much rebuild the engine with that.

Nice! My mom had one of these back in the day. I remember we had it for like 5 years, and then she traded it in on a minivan. The dealer called the next day and said the transmission blew up the first time they tried to drive it lol I say do the v8 swap, i've seen a few at the drag strip and they haul ass!
