Just got my first taste of wheelin last week. Unfortunately Capitol Forest is now closed for the season. Anyone in the Oly area know of any other good spots? I just moved here from Wisconsin. Let me know if you want to show a noob some good spots.

Dang, I didn't realize they closed that one.
Pick up one of these Delorme State wide topographic map books (http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtdItemDetail.jsp?forge_prod=KmKNvGaiMAvHMY qhco023H-y%3AS&beginIndex=0&item=338&section=10096&forge_prod_pses=forge_prod%3DKmKNvGaiMAvHMYqhco023 H-y%253AS%7E) at any of the big book stores.
Familiarize yourself with Tread Lighlty (http://www.treadlightly.org/) so we can all keep enjoying public lands with our 4x4's.
If you plan on going to some of the State designated off road areas, pick up a Northwest Forest Pass (http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/passespermits/index.shtml) though you'll probably get more use out of one of those in the spring/summer/fall than winter unless you're into sno-park activities.

Tahuya State Forest (http://www.dnr.wa.gov/AboutDNR/ManagedLands/Pages/amp_rec_tahuya_state_forest.aspx) isn't too far from you and there's a mix of easy & hard core 4x4 trails there, even if you don't go to wheel you can watch some other people and see what they do.

Most of the trails will be snow covered by now, do you have a set of chains yet? If not, Les Schwab runs a good deal that if you buy a set of chains and do not use them over the winter you can turn them in for a refund though I just kept mine since they are the nice diamond tread pattern chains.

If I get down that way on a day when we plan on exploring I'll give you a heads up though it'll probably be on a friday.
