Welcome to the boards TJQMaster.

Assuming your Xterra is still at factory height, the max recommended tire diameter is 31.75" without rubbing. That said, size 285/55-18 will work for you. However, there are not many tire models produced in this size. Another option you may want to consider if you run 18" rims is size 285/60-18. The approved rim width range for most tire models in this size is 8" to 10" with 8.5" being the most ideal.

I hope this information helps.

It definitely helps. So...if I want to upgrade from factory rims. I can go with 285/60-18 tire on a 8.5" wide rim? If I find a tire that comes in 285/55-18 (because as you say theyre not that common) I should go with a 8.0" wide rim?

thanks,

No problem. If you find a 285/55R18 go to the manufacturer's website and check the specs for the tire. They should list recommended wheel widths. After you have that, all you need to do is pick a wheel in the correct bolt pattern with the correct offset and your good to go. If you'd like some more help with a package give us a call. We'd be happy to help you.

Thanks!

The reason I chose the 55% profile tire was that it was CLOSER in size to the original tire (265/70-R16).

Another option if you want to keep the diameter close to stock is size 265/60-18. The approved rim width range for most tire models in this size is 7.5" to 9.5" with 8" being the most ideal.
