I totally love my X but...clutch and dual mass flywheel totally burned at 44K miles. I 4-wheel some, pull some small trailers ocassionally and would classify my driving style as somewhat agressive. Is this just me and my driving habits/usage or what?

I have the extended warranty but it does not cover these wear items so I am having to pay out $1400 for new clutch kit and dual mass flywheel on 4x4 model.

Just disappointed since I had higher expectations for a nissan. (this is my 5th nissan).

Anyone else had this problem? Anyone offering driving lessons to help me avoid this in the future?

I have have had simular issues, but not with my nissan. The clutch failed in my 06 Chevy Cobalt at 5400 miles. My brother had his clutch fail on his 04 Tiburon at 10,000 miles. Both occasions we were stuck with the repair bills as wear items. My brother, and I are both seasoned stick drivers and were unable to believe the premature clutch failings. I know people who have had there clutches last over 100,000 miles, and others whose cluthches failed much earlier. There is really no way of knowing how long they will last.

I would argue with them that the flywheel is NOT a "wear" item!

There have been reports of clutches in 05's failing as early as 20K. I think most got them repaired under warranty because the flywheel needed replaced too.

Someone said the flywheel is aluminum which if it is...is..well..stupid!

Thanks for the input.

Dealer said flywheel under warranty only if issue was related to flaw, not wear. Mine is wore down almost completely from wear (or wear combined with design flaw).

Well, if the flywheel really is made from aluminum, then well, I would call that a flaw. I mean damn, these are auto engineers you think they would be smarter than that. How often does a flywheel wear out? Damned if I ever had to change one on any vehicles.

Dealer said flywheel is made of steel (although no one really speaks confidently about it, like they are not sure) and they don't have many problems with them.

Just talked to dealership again and the flywheel is covered under the powertrain under "engine" but not in my case since it was due to clutch problem. So if the wear item goes out and damages something else (flywheel, windshield wipers, White House) then it is not covered.

They also said I can bring the flywheel by the dealership after repair (it's in another shop) and they can tell me if I have any claim on the warranty and then maybe they can reimburse for some of the costs.

BTW, I didn't know what a flywheel was until this and I have owned 3 standards! So I say design flaw.

Hop over to www.thenewx.org and do a quick search. There have been quite a few reports of clutch failures and in some cases it was covered under warranty. Might be worth finding a few people who had it covered and talk to them about it.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I have checked out some other X forums and it seems to be happening earlier then mine (44k) for others.

Considering the amount of clutching and shifting I do all day long, now I've got to worry that the clutch is going to go out on my 6-speed. I hope they got the bugs ironed out with the 05's. I can tell you, my work day isn't kind to a manual, and considering the first automatic I ever owned failed on me, I was hoping this nissan manual tranny would do the trick. Great.
