Hi All;
just bought an 03 XE 4wd. So far I love it. Getting about 15-16 mpg which I guess is about the norm. I got a question for the group. Are there any grease fittings in the drive line? I heard that it is a sealed unit. I haven't had it up in the air to look under it yet. The source of the info was the manager of the local Jiffy Lube, so considering the source I thought I would ask a much more knowledgable group.
I would much appreciate any and all tips you guys might have on dealing with the X
Thanks
gmac

Jiffy Rube?

sigh.

Yeah-there's a hidden fitting on the front drive shaft (Propeller shaft in Nissan Speak...)..looks like a little nut, you unscrew it, and either use a needle tip on a grease gun, or, screw in a (IIRC) 28 thread 1/4" zerk....and grease it with a normal grease fitting.

Its on the smaller part that slides...the front end.

TJ; Thanks soooo much. I would probably not have found it otherwise.
Jiffy Lube is not an option, but around here they do free lubes to get
your oil change business

I am curious to know how people made out rplacing with zerk fitting? I bought a needle and tried but it was tough to get through the seal behind the plug. I bent the needle and not much grease went in. If you did replce with zerk then how does the grease get by the seal?

It is meant for this type of needle http://www.restockit.com/Grease-Needle-Nozzle-(LIN5803).html?source=froogle&Bvar5=100F1&Bvar6=100F1&Bvar7=100F1 rather than the type meant to penetrate. Just get the proper tip for your grease gun and swap it out whenever you need to.

I know its old, but given that you can buy an 8 pack of the Zerks, are there any other locations we can drill/self tap them into or other areas on the Xterra we can grease up?

And what grease do you recommended?

you can put a zerk on the upper and lower control arms if they dont have them already...

Thats why I am asking, would be a good how to(showing all the locations) and how to properly NOT screw up the job!

I apologize for digging this out of the year 2007 but it was just a really good topic.

I know this is an old thread I'm bringing up, but the second paragraph in this Wikipedia entry has some food for thought:
