: Funny Noises
NateDawgG 01-18-2007, 12:26 PM My X makes a couple funny noises. Funny noises bother me if I don't know what they are.
Funny noise #1 - when my X is cold in the morning and I drive around the corner there is always a small, watery sound like thin ice breaking to allow liquid to flow that accompanies the acceleration out of the turn.
Funny noise #2 - when in 4x4 mode with the steering at full lock in either direction there is occasionally a grinding noise that comes out of the front end if i get on the gas hard.
Funny noise #3 - driving down a steep hill in 4x4 low w/ rear diff. locked & in hill descent mode a periodic pulsing thump-grind noise presumably associated with the hill descent mode.
Other than the noises, my stock 05 Xterra does a great job on and offroad, and feels completely solid. Do Xterras make these noises as a matter of course, or should I be driving to a local qualified Nissan shop to have things looked at?
Thanks.

No idea... sorry :(
Funny noise #2 - when in 4x4 mode with the steering at full lock in either direction ... get on the gas hard.
DON'T DO THAT!!! BAD BAD!

Perfectly normal, that is your truck doing the driving/braking for you. Everyone says the sounds are scary in hill descent mode, but it is indeed normal.

Bad because the CV joints are at such an extreme angle and subject to lots of torque? Is the noise a sign of damage or an expected sound that comes with doing that particular maneuver?
Anthony 01-18-2007, 07:22 PM It's your front drive train stuff binding. You probably don't have any damage, but it's a good way to cause some if you keep doing it. :)
meXTERRA 01-19-2007, 06:10 AM Got rid of this on my '05 X by filling the radiator. It only took about a quart of water, but the noise was gone after that. Sound comes from under the dash. Heater core maybe.
MileHigh05! 01-19-2007, 02:19 PM I definetly hear that same noise of like a drip I just figured it was normal.I was pulling people out at the last storm here in CO with no problems. I had people even knocking on my door and asking me about my truck. After all that bragging my battery died and nissian would not replace it so I was stuck on a 3ft drift for 2 days. It looked cool but I was pissed haha.
NateDawgG 01-22-2007, 03:05 PM I checked the radiator fluid level and it's full. Any other ideas?
Anthony 01-22-2007, 03:40 PM A lot of people have noticed a "bubbling" or "boiling" noise from behind the dash of the 2nd Gen Xterra. However, I don't think there is any way to correct this issue.
NateDawgG 01-22-2007, 07:10 PM Any idea what the boiling noise is?
Side note: am I correct in assuming that the first gen X referrs to all pre-2005 Xterras because the first 2 versions had mostly cosmetic diferences, or does that include 2003 to present?
Anthony 01-22-2007, 07:57 PM 1st Gen = 2000-2004
2nd Gen = 2005+
I believe the noise is related to the heater core in some way.
NateDawgG 01-23-2007, 11:15 AM Kool. Thanks. As I stated earlier, unexplained noises in my ride REALLY bug me. As long as I have an idea of what it is and nobody seems to be worried about it I'm happy.
:)

you bleed your cooling system. just saw it on another forum.
NateDawgG 01-25-2007, 12:32 PM Why would that help? As far as I can tell the coolant is fluid enough to let bubbles float to the top of the radiator. No?
Anthony 01-25-2007, 02:01 PM Yeah, I read at least one person bled the cooling system and it didn't solve the problem.
1st GEN xterra 05-02-2008, 07:35 PM i get funny noises off of my X when i go down a parking garage ramp. it comes from the passenger side in the front. does anyone know what it could be?
jman2000 05-02-2008, 07:37 PM everyone always says heatshields. I checked mine and I still get noises. Mine is a metallic vibrate/rattle. what does yours sound like?
Ricer-X 05-02-2008, 08:29 PM 1st gen x; check the front sway bar where it clips(there are 2) to the frame in the front, one of your bushings may have come off
jman; still sounds like your heat shields to me, you checked the ones on the headers? you could also check what i said above
Drake 05-02-2008, 09:03 PM i get funny noises off of my X when i go down a parking garage ramp. it comes from the passenger side in the front. does anyone know what it could be?
Honestly not trying to be a smartass bro, but can you be a little more detailed about the "funny noises"? 2WD or 4WD? If you can post as much detail about the where, what and when of the noise, somebody will probably be able to help you.
BTW... Welcome to CX!
1st GEN xterra 05-03-2008, 02:39 PM it is an '04 2WD stock, it sounds like a rattle but it does not sound as if it were to be metal. the online time i hear it is when i go down the parking ramp. thanks a lot for the Ricer-X and Drake
Drake 05-03-2008, 04:46 PM Weird. Is it under power or are you just coasting? I'm wondering if it's the washers around the torsion bars. I noticed this morning that the washer at the rear end of the t-bars hangs loose and could possible cause a rattle at slow speeds. You might check that out. If it's them, the noise would be coming from the middle of your X.
1st GEN xterra 05-04-2008, 10:14 AM i will check it out thanks a lot.
