Hi all,

I live in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories Canada. Yeah that is way up there. Lets just say Santa is my neighbour. Okay so I have a 2008 Nissan Xterra Off Road. In Canada we only get three models, S, Off Road and SE.

My Tires are 265/75 R16. My rims are R16 x 7 with a bolt pattern of 6-4.5(114.3). So far tires I found I wanted the nokian hakkapeliitta LT studded but that was a little to hight of a price for me so I went with the Yokohama geolander I/T G072. We drive a lot on ice around here. Ice Road Truckers...yeah...

Okay finding winter rims(black ones ugly as sin) that size is a pain in the butt, but I found them. Now my question is do I need to get new sensors to keep the low tire pressure light off or will the one factory Tire(my spare) keep this light off?

Just so you know we pay a lot for tires.

Tire cost approx - 840.00 (all 4)
Rims approx - 600.00 (odd size so hard to find)(all 4)
Sensors approx - 500.00(all 4)

This is not including taxes or install and balance.

Welcome to the club!

You don't actually have to have them at all, but if you don't, the light will stay lit. It won't hurt anything, but it will be on all the time (it needs to see all 4 are up to pressure, and most don't have one in the spare at all) most people just put a piece of tape over the light, lol. Some people go as far as taking out the oem sensors from their stock wheels and then putting them inside of a small wheel barrow tire and pumping it up to pressure to turn the light off. Then you just stash it under the seat or inside of the spare tire area under the truck and call it good. They are nice to have though.

Another thing you can do when it comes to wheels is, check on here and places like ebay and such for some oem wheels that someone took off and just has sitting around doing nothing. I've seen lots of sets go for $100-$200. Then you don't have to have the black ugly ones either and you can save some cash.

Welcome to the club. Any chance of seeing pics of your X on the ice road this winter?
I'm getting cold just thinking about the winter you'll be having.

Do the 2nd gen X's actually have pressure sensors in the wheel? I thought the TPMS system used the ABLS to measure wheel rotation?

Hey Creepy Cruiser,

I like the color or colour or your Xterra. Thanks for the info. I like the ugly black rims we all do it around here come winter because at -40 c and colder your don't want to be pumping up your tire. I'll check ebay out.

Hey Rattfink,

Our town is small but not that small. I do know some of the JSL crew, there is a John but I don't know his last name. Maybe it's your friend.

Nope. We've got the TPMS sensors in the wheels.

Hey Fzzt,

I think I have a movie that I made last year on a small ice road between Yellowknife and Detah. ABLS? Active Brake Limited Slip, I thought that was...well...just that. When the wheels slip yes I get the SLIP light on and then it put the brakes on the wheel that is slipping.

As far as I know yes it has sensors for tire pressure.

ICE ROAD TRUCKERS!

Do you ever see Alex or Hugh around town? They are like the main guys in all of the shows.

Welcome by the way!

You can just swap the sensors if they fit on the new wheels but if you want to get new sensors then buy them elsewhere cause at costco where I work those sensors go for around 70 bucks

Shoot! My price is 75 at Nissan.

If you want to do yourself a favor, dissasemble the dash, pull the light out, re-assemble, and buy rubber stems, and remove and sell the sensors. I HATE TPMS!!!!! Oh and the spare never has a sensor in it.
