: Hitch-Mount Tire Carrier
Anthony 01-17-2007, 04:38 PM Finally spent some time in the garage and built this thing that I've been talking about forever. It came out OK, but looking at the welds, you can tell I was rushing to get it done. (it was 20 degrees and getting dark fast) :)
Done:

Folds down to open the hatch:

Tires on (Notice it sticks out past the wheels a few inches on the ends... It's designed for larger/wider tires)

akordboy 01-17-2007, 05:02 PM looks good.....but what is the purpose of carrying 4 wheels like that??
Anthony 01-17-2007, 05:12 PM To avoid driving long distances on the swampers, particularly in the snow.
json3904 01-17-2007, 09:27 PM sweet if i were you i would pantent the idea and start welding on some more, i bet alot of people would like this for there ride!!!!!!!!
Muzikman 01-18-2007, 02:16 AM That is a great idea! You have OBA right?
fatkid_UH-60 01-18-2007, 06:11 AM i'd recommend doing a poor man's patent RIGHT NOW!!! draw up some plans and mail them to yourself. don't open the envelope! the postage mark is a federal date. hey i'd buy one at some point...
Ricer-X 01-18-2007, 07:08 AM id get it too, fantastic idea....
i thought of it first
jk:wink-big:
manny 01-18-2007, 09:04 AM Very cool. I want one too.
Anthony 01-18-2007, 05:44 PM Thanks guys! I do have the plans drawn up and dated :D ... ahead of you on that one!
Muzikman 01-18-2007, 05:48 PM What's going to stop them fromt sliding back and forth? Also, is the square tube going to gum up the hub holes in the wheels?
Anthony 01-18-2007, 06:42 PM What's going to stop them fromt sliding back and forth?
1000lb ratchet straps. (Thats what the holes are for in the tabs on the ends) Plus, its made for wider tires, so it will be a tighter fit.
Also, is the square tube going to gum up the hub holes in the wheels? I sure hope not. :D
Ricer-X 01-19-2007, 06:23 AM so what if you herculine it? just a thought
Anthony 01-19-2007, 08:15 AM That would definitely chew up the wheel center holes.
Ricer-X 01-19-2007, 09:01 AM that wasnt really my idea... it was... uh, that other guy over there told me to say that!
or how about a sleeve to insertthru the wheels/around the carrier.
that might better, but if its not that same guy told me to say that
:fussball-big:
akordboy 01-19-2007, 10:04 AM To avoid driving long distances on the swampers, particularly in the snow.
ahhh....yeah, that does make sense. Swampers are actually the cheapest tires out there.
Muzikman 01-19-2007, 10:35 AM I was thinking, can you find a piece of PVC pipe this is about the same size as the hub holes? You can then cut the pipe to length, slide it over the square bar and then slide the wheels on. That would prevent everything getting chewed up.
Muzikman 01-19-2007, 10:36 AM Nevermind, I took a second look and the ends are too large.
Ricer-X 01-19-2007, 10:41 AM I was thinking, can you find a piece of PVC pipe this is about the same size as the hub holes? You can then cut the pipe to length, slide it over the square bar and then slide the wheels on. That would prevent everything getting chewed up.
thats what i meant by "sleeve" you could cut the pipe into 4 pieces, one for each wheel, use something to keep them centered, something to increase the friction without damaging te wheel, or if the pipe is a tight enough fit then it would hold itself since the tires wont be sliding back and forth
Anthony 01-19-2007, 12:08 PM increase friction? why? The tires don't slide on there now.
Ricer-X 01-19-2007, 12:18 PM i meant between the individual sleeves and the wheels, that way if you decide to use them the wheel wont fall off the sleeves
Anthony 01-19-2007, 01:22 PM I'm not sure of the purpose of the sleeves...
