i know its an SUV but when i was getting ready to buy my xterra edmunds said the mpg is 16-17 in city and 18-21 highway and all the reviews say they get 17 to 18 and 21 on highway just woundering what you all get and if there is anyway to get better mpg my xterra gets about 13.5 to 14 in city and 17 on the highway

I'll point out the obvious.. at least for the highway.. slow down.. I went from around 18 to 19 by giving up 5mph instead of doing 75-80, i do 70-75.. and im sure many more mpg if I slowed down farther.. but here in FL on I-4 you'll get run over.. haha

Check the pressure in your tires against what the tire manufacturer recommends.
If you post what kind of tires you have, their size and how much load your X carries daily, I'm sure the forum can help you zero in on a good mpg range for the PSI while still staying safe.

Doohic722's advice x2
Keep the X fixed & tuned up.
Try different brands, grades of gas.
Google hypermiling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling)

in my area Ive found my local Sunoco to give me the best mpg so far, also, yeah.. hypermiling.. keeping constant speeds, fluctuations in speed hurt gas mileage.. make sure she's breathing good, check your air filter, etc.

theres all kinds of whacky stuff.. filling up your tank in the morning while the gas stations are nice and cool.. filling up your tank slower than normal to get the best bang for your buck.. (all about the volume in both cases)... Never fill up if you see the tanker truck there, while they are filling up the underground tanks they could be kicking up some nice sediment that could end up in your tank

in the old days you would want to keep your tank full as much as possible because of evaporation, I dont think its an issue anymore really, with how tight/pressurized the syztems are?

Anticipating lights/traffic/ on and on.. Arguably change to synthetic lubricants if your using dyno juice.

Im not sure if Id get better or worse gas mileage if I had an automatic.. I always downshift/brake, I imagine if I only used my brakes I might get a touch better gas mileage but then I'd be replacing my brake pads sooner..

I just filled up on my way home, Im going to use the gas saver tune on my superchips for the first time in the AM.. for the last idk.. 5/6 months Ive been running the volant w/powercore filter and the superchips programmer (87 performance tune), getting steady numbers. I'll be looking forward to the upcoming results

clean your MAF and remove your intake resonators, i did this mod and found it pulled a couple of MPG for me. I also put in a K&N Drop in, this too helped out. But i'm still getting about 15 mpg. I followed this link, it was incredibly helpful. The whole mod took about an hour, and its pretty simple.

When you checked EDMUNDS did you look at the same year? I believe that the GEN2s get better MPG than the GEN1s.

have you ever been in one?? surprisingly large inside. I had an ex g/f that was a tall girl, had no problems driving it. and when she folded the backseats down had plenty of room for her ~120lb great dane and ~75lb chocolate lab for road trips. I was surprised how big and comfy it was inside. just sayin.

There are a few ways.
1. tow it.
2. Draft other suvs or semis.
3. engine swap
4. move to a higher elevation. (I get 18-20mpg at 4500 feet, and only 16-18 at close to sea level.)

Well you can start by removing all the seats. Ripping all the plastic, radio, speakers, anything that has any weight should be gone. only thing that is left should be the steering wheel, one seat and the shifter. that ought to do it.

i agree, the Fits are sweet..

Went to the Orlando Auto show last year and some hot little rep tore that thing apart for us to show how flexible it is (and she is)

My GF's Dad is a BIG dude (not 6'7") prob 6' and 300lbs, he loved it, has bad knees but could get in and out of it the best out of ANY vehicle at the entire car show.

Do the intake mod. That will help you 2mpg or so. You will have to get K&N Filter though. But they are reasonable. Also, you could buy a 20 dollar glass pack and put that in....I think that helps a tad...

Here is the link to the intake mod.

I am picking up my new-to-me 2002 X today, and like everyone performance and greater fuel mileage is attractive. I am trading a 2006 lancer for it and I also drive a 93 jeep with a 4ltr and 370,000kms (229907.3 miles).
This X will replace both vehicles,,, Fuel mileage was not a concern when I was shopping for a vehicle.
I have found in the past that a cold air intake system, matched with a higher flow exhaust helps with performance (drag strip tested) and fuel economy (road trip tested).

I have read about the removing of the resonators, and adding a K&N. and people claim improvements,,, thats great, I might try it temporally. But the air box still draws from the same restrictive inlet. How can you maximize the K&N efficiency if it is starving for air?
I think I might continue with what works for me and get myself a AEM CAI. http://www.aemintakes.com/search/aemsearch.aspx
Of course this won’t work for everyone, since it does present a greater chance of getting wet. But I don’t plan to hit water holes at 30mph, or submerge. Although plenty of friends wheel with this similar intake systems, and have no mercy.
I have worked out the cost of my last intake for my Lancer, and it had paid for itself with the fuel savings, and sound good too :) , I expect it’ll do the same for the X

My personal fuel saving tips:
- Light on the peddle
- Don’t exceed the speed limit (saves the cost of a violation ticket too)
- Regular tune ups
- ***WEIGHT*** keep unnecessary weight at home
- Tire PSI

oh... ok really didnt know that. this post was not about getting great mpg, its about making sure that my xterra is running right. sorry if you all took it the wrong way. just thought this would be a good way to get an idea on if it is running right by talking to other owners.

On the maiden voyage to caculate my fuel mileage, I had to stop short due to a coolant leak. It appears to be comming from inside the bell housing. but I am not going to investigate, I am returning it to the dealership where I bought it 18 hours ago! I hope this is not a sign of things to come... I may have to go back to Jeeps!

I agree with slowing down.

I did a run from Salt Lake to Wendover at about 80 and used half a tank.
On the way back I did about 55-60mph (was in convoy with a moving van as the lead) and used half that much.

xxyournoonexx

I don't know about slowing down...I've made to LA from SD in 1/2 tank going speed limit....and did it in a little over a 1/4 on the way back running about 80. (Same amount of traffic both ways)

Nah...What have you to do is drill holes all over the Xterra. Give it that wiffle ball effect. Once you do that, you'll be as light as a Honda fit. Also, remove all the seats and interior. As if your going to the drag strip. :) No need for a spare tire either. Getting a good healthy die will help shed weight off the driver.

Just kidding. ;)

Go east only. I drove from Abilene to Lubbock (170miles) and used half a tank...on the way back used 1/4 of a tank.

The west texas winds helped me a long. Next time I make the trip I am going to install a sail on top and keep the engine in idling in gear....should get mpg though the roof.

I had the same thing with the desert winds out here in Utah. Maybe we need to rig up some sails or something? Unlimited east-bound mileage!

I just did my first fuel economy test since buying my 02 the other week.
X= 2002, 4x4, auto. Entirely stock, wheels/ intake/ exhaust/ filters/ conventional oils/ on regular pump gas @ 87 octane. I do have a added cargo/safari rack = wind resistance

This is average/everyday driving,
60% street 40% high/ free way.
90% of the time no cargo,

Distance traveled on a full tank (until gas light came on) - 470km (292mile)
Quantity to refill tank - 63ltr (16gal)

= 7.5ltr/ 100km (18.25mpg)

Considering what this vehicle is (size vs power) I am pleased. Of course I like a challenge, so from here I will begin to do all the recommendations to improve on these figures. [/B]

Mines all about the same, but I get 200 miles roughly and 11.4-13.0
