Alright, I have seen this so often that I thought I would put it in a few places, and make it a sticky, since it gets asked

every
single
day.

I hear too often that, "he cannot make it over the rock because he is only running 235's"

You can have a 40" tire that is a 235, and you can have a 20" tire that is a 235.

when looking at a metric size tire there are 3 numbers

265/65/17

The first number is the width. 265 is the width in millimeters. there are 25.4mm in one inch. Therefore, you must divide 265mm by 25.4mm, and you will have the width in inches.

265/25.4=10.43"

next number is 65. This number is called the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the sidewall height. In this case, the sidewall height is 65% of the 10.43" (265mm) width.

Therefore you multiply 10.43x.65 and you get=6.78" That is your sidewall height. Since you have a top and bottom sidewall, you multiply this times 2. This equals 13.56".

Now you have your third number that is the rim diameter-17"

You must add your rim diameter to the sidewall height. 17" + 13.56"=30.56"

Refer others to this thread in the future please.

Yeah but if you do not know what the numbers mean then it is pointless.

Here's another way to convert them: Tire Size Calculator (http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos) (I can't tell you how much I use this. It lives on my computer.)

Any another link to help you understand that all the numbers and letters are on the side of your tires:

I know what the numbers mean in standard.

Well how come you said (when speaking of 265/75/16) "I do not know how wide 75 equals out to" when 75 is not even the width.
