: electrical problem
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 10:08 AM alright dudes, i put the new starter on and i had the 4runner running for about 15min yesterday, i had to jump it, it took a lil while to get it to turn over
it died like someone turned the key off, no stuttering, nothing, so then this morning i go out to see if i can get her running again, and i cant, the engine wont even make 1 full turn, hooked up to the xterra(with an alt upgrade) the system in the runner loses all charge the moment i turn the key, the runner has a high output alt also, the battery in there is only 1.5yrs old
any advice on what to look at?
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 12:36 PM i keep trying to reason it out in my head before i randomly start tearing into shit, maybe im overthinking it. but it dosent make sense to me unless its a short somewhere.
but if its a short where would it be? bc i have power(when hooked to the xterra) until i turn the key, then nothing, and when i back off on the key, i have power again
heus33 09-04-2009, 12:59 PM Sounds like a possible ground issue or ignition wiring problem to me.
TimRich 09-04-2009, 01:14 PM Definately sounds like a short to me too... Try looking around the new started you installed to see if it's shorting out somewhere... Another thing to check is the battery terminals. Did you disconnect them when you installed the started? Maybe you didn't tighten them up whenyou were done... Just a thought.
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 02:03 PM i think you dudes are right, the more i think about why it wont start sounds like a ground issue.
im not sure if that would have caused it to die the way it did though, but im about to go check into it, the starter connections are fine, i think whatever the prob is, became a problem yesterday wcausing it to die
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 02:39 PM what are the chances that the battery could be the problem here?
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 03:26 PM got the batt out
gonna take it to get tested
also cleaned out my engine bay so i can see stuff, there was so much dirt/dried mud that everything looked the same
TimRich 09-04-2009, 04:03 PM There's always a chance it could be the battery...lol Can you pop in the battery from the x to see if it fires up with that one?
soccerbrace 09-04-2009, 06:55 PM Does it have an exciter? Left fender well?
TimRich 09-04-2009, 08:27 PM Does it have an exciter?
Not unless you are workin under the hood...LOL
json3904 09-04-2009, 09:08 PM maby you hooked one of the starter wires up wrong???? that would cause you to drain the battery...
silverbullet 09-04-2009, 09:22 PM I'm thinking battery here Dustin. Thats what it sounds like to me. Definitely get it checked atleast. you might wanna get your alternator checked too or just check it when you get it running and see if its charging the battery for sure.
json3904 09-04-2009, 09:24 PM well he said he took the battery out but after that he never responded... dustin you are slacking.. LOL
Ricer-X 09-04-2009, 10:12 PM i am slacking
its in the back of the xterra
ended up scoopin my buddy and going to specs instead of oreillys, lol
will do it manana
the alt is new it should be good, its only had 1 wheeling trip which wasnt very muddy either
json3904 09-05-2009, 12:30 AM let me ask you this did you have them test the alt when you bought it??? knowing you i doubt you did.. LOL i would still have them check it...
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 12:55 AM i ordered it from the webz from this company that makes high output alts for yotas
json3904 09-05-2009, 01:00 AM i know thats why i am messing with ya.. LOL i would still get it checked just to be sure...
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 02:41 PM it was the battery!!
she is ALIIIIIVVVEEEE!!!!
mwuahahah
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 03:01 PM SOB
now somehting in the driveline is binding, seems to be from the rear since i have the hubs unlocked
made it about 1.5 truck lengths out of the garage and then violent loud popping that keeps the truck from moving
sigh
will it ever end?
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 04:17 PM ok, so its a billion degrees out right now, so im gonna wait a lil bit
but i think something in the drum brake on the d side broke or got loose and is getting caught up in there
ps it binds MORE driving forward than reverse
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 06:27 PM snowballing
so, i opened up one brake(fixed my ebrake!!!)
and even though nothing was broke, i had cleaned all the mud out, and decided to crank it up and see if it would roll
well it didnt, but my charge batt light starts flashing and i think oh shit, my alt. well no sooner than i look up from the dash i hear mad squealing and blue smoke pouring out of the hood, turns out, my fan/pulley isnt turning, the the alt is run directly off that, tso the alt wasnt turning, but the belts that use that pulley as an idler were all burning rubber on it
sigh
json3904 09-05-2009, 06:58 PM sorry to hear about that D... was the belt to tight???
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 07:05 PM nah man, but at least i know what the screeching noise was, lol it was whatever reason the fan assy isnt turning
ill tear into it tomorrow
i have done so much solo wrenching lately, i dont think id know what to do with myself if i had someone else there, lol
json3904 09-05-2009, 07:08 PM is that the reason you got off the phone so fast???
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 07:13 PM no the reason i got off the phone was the driveline binding up and violent poping noises that shook the truck
like, it would bog, violent pop, roll a few inches, bind, violent pop roll a few inches, bind; at which point i said 'oh shit dude my rear end is binding up lemme let you go'
json3904 09-05-2009, 08:12 PM i say load it up on the trailer and bring it down tomorrow... LOL
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 08:34 PM lol, it dosent really drive, or roll
i wont get it on the trailer without braking something
jeebus i hope its not my tcase
im gonna open up the other brake tomorrow, and inspect the diff
whats worse is my x is trapped between the runner and the garage
json3904 09-05-2009, 08:36 PM wow that sucks...
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 08:39 PM lol, i knowz
if its not the p side rear brake hangin up, then its either the diff or the tcase
the tcase output shafts have been known to fail on the yotas abused on the trail, that #%^$% costs $239 from all pro(it an HD version that wont break again
json3904 09-05-2009, 09:05 PM well that still sucks... what all you got planed tomorrow? just working on the runner? dose Krys work tomorrow??? i have been throwing the idea around about coming up there tomorrow just dont know if it will happen yet... i will call you tomorrow and let you know.....
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 09:16 PM krys works, but you should totally come anyway, and yep, all ill be doing is wrenching
json3904 09-05-2009, 09:16 PM what time dose she work???
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 09:22 PM she leaves here at 4
prob works til close
dosent mean we cant go up to the bar though
so what time abouts would you be coming up here if you came?
json3904 09-05-2009, 09:33 PM i dont know the time yet and it would be kinda hard to go up to the bar since we would have the baby.. LOL
Ricer-X 09-05-2009, 09:37 PM oh werd yo, so you gonna bring jo?
kylee is in sweeny right now
just lemme know man!
json3904 09-05-2009, 09:39 PM i will call you tomorrow and let you know...
Ricer-X 09-06-2009, 02:43 PM found the culprit for my belt problem
fan idler bracket, all seized up, there goes $70 more $
i had to tear all the way to the timing belt to get it off
now, unto my driveline problem, why couldnt i have had these problems last week when it was only 90* at 3pm instead of 110*
im inside hydrating and cooling off, ill be back out there in prob the next 30 min
will update
Ricer-X 09-06-2009, 04:16 PM alright, so i know the problem is somewhere from the diff to the rear d side wheel
th etires will no turn opposite when i spin them, when i turn eithe wheel(p side turns fine, d side get hung up) the drive shaft turns rather than the opposite wheel
can anyone help me diagnose this problem before i tear the whole axle assy apart?
Ricer-X 09-06-2009, 04:29 PM after some internet reading
i think the rear axle bearing is my problem, though i dont know yet bc i cant figure out how to get the damn axle to slide out of the housing, lol
Ricer-X 09-07-2009, 01:03 PM found my driveling prob
wheel bearing fail
http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp229/krysrenee/0907091059.jpg
silverbullet 09-07-2009, 01:40 PM yeah that might cause a little binding. lol
Ricer-X 09-07-2009, 02:57 PM the seal had deteriorated along the inner edge allowing mad water/mud into the bearing
i cleaned all the dirt out of it since i took the pic, its totally mangled
Ricer-X 09-13-2009, 10:05 AM made some progress
replaced both rear wheel bearings, replaced the fan idler bracket
the truck runs and rolls beautifully
just gotta bleed the brakes
i think my booster needs to be changed, when i pump the brakes the truck idles down, alot
pretty sure the master cylinder needs changing, and the rear wheel cylinders, as well as all the springs and other hardware in the rear brakes, esp the ebrake spring
, i fixed the ebrake, but i needz a new spring so it will disengage
