hows it goin yall?
i just bought my 01 xterra se last month, and i absolutely am in love with it..
well i me and a buddy of mine decided it would be fun to go play in some local mud hole.. well it was fun until my service engine soon light began to blink at me, and then it became constant...
upon gettin out and goin towards some better light, i on a whim decide to check my air filter.... SOAKED!! anyways, today ive replaced the air filter, changed oil and oil filter, but still no avail..
i have the v6 5 spd 4wd, and she seems to idle ok, just a little rough at times, but the major problem i notice is she boggs down at about 3k rpm in any given gear, this is a little bit of a probelm, being as i am in the Marine corps, and it is my mode of trasportation to go about 200 miles a week or so in. was hoping yall could help point me in th right direction.

When you changed the oil, if there was water mixed in, you could have problems.

You definately are going to need to change your spark plugs, and check your distributer for any water. I would dry it out as best as you can if its wet. If theres a lot, try to soak up as much water as you can, and then leave it open with a fan angled down on it for a couple hours.

You're lucky you didnt hydro-lock your motor! I hear a snorkel coming in the future...

You probably should check your diff fluid too, and spray some silicone or wd40 in your distributor.

Also, if everything seems fine and you still have the service engine light on, disconnect your battery for a couple hours and it should reset the light.

how do i check the diff. fluid? liek i said i just got my toy, and not really sure how that works...
the light went off, but im still suffering power loss, especially in 5th, trying to accelrate from 60 to what ever. and damn is 6 a bitch and a half to get to, ive also replace my air filter, and how hard is all the intake tubing to get out, so i can at least run some dish soap and water through it?

Your MAF sensor is also fershmigled.

Get some MAF sensor cleaner at PepBoys, etc...take the poor thing out, and clean it up...put it back. Most of your engine symptoms may go away....not all the problems (See above advice), but it will run better.

The sensor is that thing the air passes on the way from the filter to the engine...if you open te box up, you'll see it.

:D

On the tops of your differentials (The diff is the thing with the gears in it, that the axle tubes go into...) are breathers...they are there to let the hot air escape when the diffs get hot from working hard...and to let make-up air back in, when the diffs cool again.

If the breathers are underwater...especially if the diffs were hot when you went in...and are cooling in the water...they can suck in water instead of make up air.

We like to extend the ends of the breather tubes to a higher point...some people ran them into their tail lights or the hood/cowl area for example, etc....to help avoid water in the diffs.

(Vinegrette is a lousy lube)

Same with the tranny and T-case...they too have breathers...same idea.

Changing ALL your fluids to synthetic can save your ass..as the synthetic lubes stay on the metal parts when wet...protecting them better than dino juice.

To check the diffs...there's two plugs on each diff (Screw ins) ...the one sort of in the middle of the diff is the fill plug...it gets filled to the bottom edge of that plug hole.

The one near the bottom of the diff is the drain plug.

ALWAYS remove the fill plug first, so you do NOT drain it, and THEN find that you can't fill it again, etc. :D

So - you open the fill plug (Use a square drive extension on a ratchet or breaker bar, etc...to fit into the plug to turn it...), and peak in.

Use a flashlight to see better...any signs of rust, water droplettes, or white emulsion means you're fucked. :D So - you drain, flush it, and re-fill.

If its filled higher than the fill hole (Oil comes out when you remove the plug...), as the water is heavier than the oil, and goes to the bottom...it means there's water under the oil btw.

Have fun!
:D
