parked my vehicle for four days, when i came back and tried to start it, it was stone dead, not even a click, I put a partial charge on it, then used my jumper box and got it running, I let it run fr about an hour with no accessories on. When I would drive down the street, the charging light and the brake warning light would come on under acceleration and go out at an idle, so I had it towed to the dealer and they supposedly did a diagnostic on it and said it needed a battery. two hours later they called back and said that the alternator was over charging so that needed to be replaced, my question at this point is,:usuck: shouldn't that have showed up on the diagnostic? When I asked the dealer that question, they said not always, fortunately the alternator is covered under my extended warranty, but the battery with diagnostic was $250.00 am I getting "jerked" by the dealer here or what, also it will take three days for them to get a Nissan Reman. alternator.

That is way too much for a OEM battery. You could get a sweet Optima for that much. Get a better battery and have them put it in after they do the warranty work.

The Diagnostic and the battery were $250.00, that seems to be the going rate around here for that, my wife had the same thing done at Saab and it was that amount. My concern is why did they not pick up the overcharging issue prior to the battery replacement? In other words did they just change the battery because it was the easiest thing to do and charge me for the diagnostic, that was not done or is it possible that it did not show up because the battery was not fully charged. I know that these dealers have to make money to survive, but I don't want to be abused!

Alternators are quirky things. Before they completely fail outright, they can go from overcharging to charging normally, or undercharging to charging normally, back and forth for a few months even, and then fail. I just went through those issues with my wife's car. Two different diagnostics claimed the alternator was fine, while a third caught an undercharge.
However, $250 for a battery and battery diagnostic is ridiculous. Auto Zone, O'Reilly and Advance Auto all do battery/alternator diagnostics for free.
