: Stumped
02xblk 08-11-2009, 03:15 PM Hello everyone. New to the forum and to xterras. Here is the deal. My girlfriend's 02 v6 won't start. Battery holds a charge(at first) and when i jump it the alternater charges the battery back up fine. When i put the car in reverse drive around the block, put it in park and turn it off there is a clicking sound coming from right behind the e-brake release lever. when i hit the brake pedal the click stops and starts radomly. this continues until the battery dies and i jump it again. I reset computer and still does same thing. any help would be GREATLY appreciated
Solenoid somewhere? Maybe something with the fuel pump, sending unit (it has a recall), or something with evap canister? I don't see what would have anything to do with the brakes though. Unless there is some sort of wiring short in the lights popping causing that sound.
02xblk 08-11-2009, 04:36 PM I was going to look at soleniods next. Can anyone tell me what the box is behind the e-brake release lever is. Has 3 plugs(from what i can see) When i pull the bottom plug out the clicking stops alltogether, plug it in starts again. I don't think she had the recal looked at. It has about 115xxx on it.
02xblk 08-11-2009, 04:37 PM Thanks Odin by the way!
Can you get a picture or diagram? I haven't messed with my e-brake so I'm not quite familiar with it. Is it behind the fuel filter near the spare? Probably evap canister if so. I can't picture anything else in my head but been a while since I had a good look under there.
By the way, with 115K on it have you had your timing belt changed? If not, do it ASAP before you end up with a busted engine.

I have a 2000, with the same click, let us know what you find.
02xblk 08-11-2009, 05:46 PM Thanks everyone. It was wierd just bought a battery and slapped it in there and shes fine, for now. My volt meter said the old battery wasn't dead that was why i was confused, read over 12 volts and when started read to like 13.5. Im not one to just go buy stuff and replace it but it worked this time. Sorry still don't know what the click is but that was wacked too.(went away also) Timing belt huh? Hate that job. Owned about 7 Yotas in my lifetime so thats nothing new haha. If she still has the x ill save that project for the fall. Thanks for all your quick replies.
Don't save that project for the fall. Do it now. It is supposed to be replaced at 105,000. If it breaks, your engine is toast.
Clicking might have been a solenoid or something not getting proper power from a battery that was low/bad.
soccerbrace 08-11-2009, 06:08 PM A volt meter will not tell you crap about a battery until it is running. If the battery can still recover, it does not mean that the battery is good if it drains when you crank, or drive.
02xblk 08-11-2009, 06:54 PM It didn't drain when i cranked it over. It would crank and start a couple of times and then the clicking would start, then it wouldn't crank. I even let it sit for an hour and one time it started and then it didn't the next.
json3904 08-11-2009, 10:11 PM i agree about the t-belt... you need to change it pretty quick, dont put it off cause you might not be to lucky when it breaks...
J Everett 08-11-2009, 10:40 PM I seem to remember reading in another thread that the box behind the parking brake lever is an ABS or Airbag computer....lemme see if I can find it.
EDIT: Ah, here we go. It is the airbag module (referred to as the SRS module in the thread). BTW, if you haven't read this thread yet, read it. It one of the greatest stories of resurrection on the internet!

soccerbrace 08-13-2009, 01:35 PM Yeah that is the ABS comp. If the batter dropped below 10.4VDC while cranking for more than 5 seconds, then the battery is bad or needs to be recharged.
