Taking a poll here, I'm a newb to the x, with the jeep I would use mobil 10w30. With the x I want to make sure I'm doing it right. I have a 2005 x offroad edition. So which should I use

Well, "the best" is really a matter of opinion. I use Mobile 1 Synth 5w-30. I use OEM Nissan filters and change it every 5000 miles. I have a little over 30k on the X right now and after the next change I'll be sending the oil out to get analyzed

The "Best Oil" seems to be Amsoil. It gets the highest marks when analyzed.

I think as long as you check and change your oil (and filter) on a regular basis you can use any oil.

check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ for more information than you ever cared to learn about oil.

Using 10W-30 is a good choice for your x.

As for brand, I use Valvoline, Castrol, or any upper-echelon name-brand synthetic. I never liked Penzoil or any other discount brand.

Haven't gone to synthetic yet; I may when I hit 5K in the X.

I use synthetic.
On this topic though, has any one who uses synthetic oil noticed that when they drain the oil out of the pan they get less than they would with draining regular oil. Since I switched I seem to be only getting 3.5 to maybe 4 litres back where as with regular oil I was getting 4 - 4.5 litres back. One mechanic told me that this was common with synthetic oils. I've checked for leaks but none have been found. Any thoughts?

Are you wanting to use synthetic oil? If so, I've switched mine over to Royal Purple and am pretty pleased with it. I can't remember off the top of my head what weight I used and not sure if it's the same for the newer model xterras. I want to say it was a 5W-30.

Mobil 1 is another good brand that comes recommended by a lot of owners. Especially the oil filters.

ill vouch for royal purple
i used mobil1 for years and then made the switch over to royal purple
couldnt really tell a difference
but, the knowledge that mobil1 is a group 3 synthetic and royal purple is a group 4 is good enough for me

Castrol Syntec 5w-30

I figured if the dino oil GTX stuff made my old nissan pickup last to 215,000 and then some. The syn stuff should be good enough.

Make sure a quality filter (mobil 1, wix, nissan OEM) is used also or that good oil is wasted on a cheap filter that goes into bypass mode within the first 1k miles after it plugs up!

couldnt really tell a difference I am in the same boat as Dustin here. I had Mobil 1 then went RP. Did not feel a difference. But let me tell you, I felt a HUGE difference when I went synthetic from dino

Don't forget K & N! They make a great oil filter. HOWEVER, I recommend Mobil 1 over K & N because they use the EXACT SAME filter media but Mobil 1 is a couple of bucks cheaper. If you cannot get a Mobil 1, go with K & N if you like.

Again, these are MY opinions, so take it as you will.

Mobil 1 is thee most recommended oil to switch to when going synthetic.

No matter what brand, or what type (conventional or synthetic) of oil, the most important thing to remember is to keep your oil and filter clean. Also, make sure you air filter is working properly.

Personally, I run Quaker State synthetic 10W-30, but there are a lot of great oils out there. For synthetics many people use Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Amsoil.

Agreed on the K&N filter. I forgot to add it to the list. I use to run it all the time. Great filter!

As long as you use a good name brand oil, use what you feel best with.
Always change out your filter also.
Change your oil when you are suppose to.
I have been using I use mobil1 5w30 since it came on the market.
Problems = zero.
But, every week-end I do a tire check, fluid check and a good look see.
I really do not think there is any "best" oil.
Keep it clean and keep it changed.

This is just my opinion....

I use cheap oil and a good filter and change it according to the severe service schedule (3750 miles for a 2nd gen).
If you wish to extend the oil drain intervals then go with synthetic.
