: Suspension Bottoming out! 2006 Offroad

I have a 2006 Xterra Offroad. Does anyone have issues with the rear suspension bottoming out on small bumps? I have the stock bilstein suspension off road package. Even when I have a couple people in the back, the smallest bump causes my limiters to bottom out on my axle. Anyone else have this issue??? Thanks!

well I got a 2005 x offroad, and I never had that issue before.

It's a very common issue with the 05+ Xterra. Unfortunately they are just the victim of poor design.

The most popular fix is to install Timbren bumpstops, and that seems to fix the issue.

I would also suggest AALs if you carry cargo or tow anything with your X.

AAL's are Add-A-Leaf's. They add additional 1-3 springs to your leafspring pack which makes it a bit higher and a bit stiffer. Check Here for AAL's (http://www.4x4parts.com/public_html/shop/index.php3?page=shop/browse&category_id=96755bb8ae21a29fb8ad073c540e988a&ps_session=1d82ad77e9a7c2d42b912fa07a9c7219)

The Timbren bumpstops are essentially a compressible rubber "spring" rather than a hard rubber 'stop." So they absorb the impact of the last inch or so of suspension travel. Check here for Timbrens (http://www.timbren.com/timbren-application-guides/nissan.htm)

Here's a pic under full compression http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d139/usmcxterra/Timbren/IMG_1233.jpg

Mine had the same issue. I had a local spring shop install two full-size leafs on each side. It doesn't bottom out anymore - the ride is stiffer, though. I don't mind it because I carry a lot of gear and tow quite frequently.

so my best bet is to install two full size leafs, will the rear be higher or just stiffer since i also haul some stuff for instance i went out to glamis for haloween with my quad hauler banshee and the ride was horrible, thanks for your time...

BTW - AAL's stiffen the ride...and, that means they take away flex.... = less articulation, as the leaf pack is stiffer.

You lose a lot of rear wheel travel with AAL's.

I also carry a lot of weight, I have to pack environmental sampling equipment into the boonies....at the last truck stop scale, my X was about 5,800 lb....

So I have one set of AAL for lift (I have a 3" SL), and one set to help the pack carry the ginormous load...and a set of Revolver Shackles to provide pretty much ALL of the articulation....as after the first AAL, the leaf flex was all but neutralized...

For the 2005+ X's....SOME have bottoming problems....between AAL and Timbrens...the Timbrens are the better choice...

A set of longer rear shackles is cheaper though, and will also cure the bottoming problem, but, will help, rather than hurt, wheel travel.

The OEM Shackles are about 3.5" long, center of eye to center of eye for the 2005+'s (~3" for the pre-2005's...)....you want to get at least 1.5" of lift out of them (The AAL's add 1.5-2" of lift...) to work...so you need to find/make shackles that are ~ 6.5" eye to eye to get ~ 1.5" of lift. (1/2" of lift for every extra inch of shackle length...)

4x4parts.com has lift shackles in that range.

:D

Hope that helps a bit.
