: Grinding noise when wheel is turned to full lock position
lowiq 11-29-2006, 09:01 AM my 2002 x v6 is making a terrible grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel to the full lock position in either direction. It sounds as though something is binding.
I climbed under there and checked out the control arms, tie rods, etc, and nothing seems to be loose, broken, or making contact where it shouldn't.
I can't get under there when it's moving, althoug my wife might want me to
I took it to the shop and they said there was nothing wrong... OK... THEN WHAT IS THAT SOUND....
Is there an adjustment for the wheel lockouts? I wouldn't mind giving up a tiny bit of turning radius to get rid of that sound.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Anthony 11-29-2006, 09:46 AM It's probably just rubbing on the stops. But it may be hitting the brake sheilds, if so you can adjust your turn stops. There are four total, one front and one back on each side. After you adjust them, make sure you grease them.
They look like this:

json3904 12-01-2006, 08:39 AM i had the same problem, all you can do is buy new turn stops or the dealer just put some grease on them for me when i took it, cause i couldnt find the problem. if you use the grease then it will wear off in a couple of months and you just put some more on it. i forgot how much the stops were you can call the dealer and im sure they have them.
Mike51rs 12-02-2006, 05:32 PM I had that same problem in my pontiac bonneville. The ginding noise in the bonny was due to a broken power steering pump. Try turning the wheel to its lock position without the car in motion...if it still makes the noise its probably the pump...if not it could be what anthony suggested.
lowiq 12-04-2006, 09:35 AM A little grease has cured my groaning... thanks to all that offered advice. I opted for the monthly lube instead of the dealer only part... those guys have enough of my money.

json3904 12-04-2006, 06:32 PM i know how that is thats why i lube mine up, when i start to hear the noise.
xterra3202 12-15-2006, 09:09 AM Mine has done the same thing...funny thing is that the dealer told me there was a rubber cap on them from the factory and that it was worn down???? Im not sure about that because I told them to order new ones and all that came was a bolt with no rubber end cap. I called BS put some grease on it and that is about it. Not sure if it is a scam from the dealer but just beware.

Anthony 12-15-2006, 11:24 AM It's true, they come with nylon caps from the factory, but those are long gone after a couple years. You CAN order new nylon caps, or you can just keep them greased.
nigeltufnel 08-22-2007, 11:16 PM i have the same problem with my 2003 nissan xterra. What kind of grease should i use?
Anthony 08-23-2007, 08:02 AM Any kind of automotive grease will be fine, just pick up a container of it at your local autoparts store. If you're not sure what you're looking for, ask at the counter and they grab it for you. It'll only be a couple dollars.
nigeltufnel 09-29-2007, 11:42 PM I finally bought some grease and applied it on the turn stop. It worked perfectly. The noise disappeared, and it was easy to fix especially with the picture being posted to show exactly how the turn stop looked. Thanks guys.
Katiev_89 05-02-2008, 09:00 PM Mines does the samething and i just grease it up and it stops the grinding. I took it to the dealer and they wanted to charge me up the wazoo to have the turn stops replaced...i said no thanks grease works just fine for me.

Katiev_89 05-03-2008, 09:11 AM Thanks! :wink-big:
Brett89 05-06-2008, 08:53 PM Thank you for this, I literally brought mine into the dealership here to figure out if it was serious or not. looks like I'll be greasing them.
Katiev_89 12-07-2008, 02:25 PM I gotta quick question.....im changing the brakes on my xterra and i can figure out how to get the hub off to get the rotor off...any advice??
k1w1t1m 12-07-2008, 07:48 PM Katiev 89 we need more info. 4x2 or 4x4.
Basically take the caliper off and tie it up out of the way. Then you have to remove the autohub if 4x4 and undo the hub retaining nut(s). Be careful there are lock washers and stuff in there that you need to keep in the right order. Try and find a thread called useful information that I posted. That has links to FSMs.
