I have a 2005 off-road Xterra with the Rockford Fosgate audio package in it and I want to know how to find out what kind of speakers are installed in it.

The reason for this is that I think the existing speakers lack clarity. I happen to have a set of Infinity 6012i reference speakers laying around and want to know if it's worth swapping them out.

Without removing the door panels, how can I find out what speakers came with my truck?

Thanks.

the fronts should be 6x9's and the rears should be 6 1/2s. thats what's in the stock speaker set up anyhow. check out crutchfield.com....they should have an option on their website to check what kind of audio components fit in your vehicle. i have an 05 with a stock set up that i upgraded to aftermarket. let me know if you need anymore help.

I am aware of the speaker size. What I'm wondering about is the brand and model so I can compare them to the Infinitys I have, and then determine if it's worth swapping the stock speakers out with the Infinity speakers.

here is my guess. if it has the fosgate system then im willing to bet it has fosgate speakers. thats just my opinion. i have a 2000 se, and i changed out all my speakers and my head unit, the head unit is a pioneer mp3, i have fosgate mid and highs in front, memphis 6x9's in the rear and fosgate 12" subs (p2's) in cargo area. i also have a fosgate amp for the subs, and a nitro 4 chan for the highs. also a cap to push the amps.

i have a 06 w/ stock set up. i am getting some alpine, and i kno you have to cut out some plastic in the speaker hole to get them to fit. i would not be suprised if you have to do the same. like the guy said above, go to crutchfield. theyre amazing, click on chat with an accociate and ask them, theyll tell you for sure right away

best of luck

Yeah crutchfeild is great for there tech's but dont buy anything from them. When i bought my system they wanted twice as much for it and that didnt include the install. so i went to a local shop and i will keep going back to them as long as the are open. but crutch might have better deals now its been almost a year since i was looking to buy... best of luck hope you find what you need.......

I appreciate your input, but I am still left wondering if the Infinitys I own will or will not sound better then the Fosgate speakers that came with the Xterra.

The guy at the auto store told me it wasn't the speakers, but the amp and that I need more power! Given that the system is a 400watt system I find that hard to believe.

My old Xterra had the Infinitys installed on a 100W Alpine without a subwoofer. The whole system cost under $500 and sounded better than the $900 Rockford Fosgate that came as a Nissan accessory. It doesnt have the bass and its louder, but it doesn't sound as good (if that makes sense).

I'm not interested in spending more dough at this time, but I have this awesome speaker set that I thought might improve things.

Ive Had Experience With Both Infiniti And Fostgate, I Personally Think Infiniti Sounds Better Hands Down...
I Meant To Type Infinity!

I just spoke with one of the audio engineers at my work who said the first thing I should do is figure out if the crossover on my system is adjustable. He thinks there may be too many mids going to the sub-woofer and making things "muddy".

the amp thing is completly true. you need more power to power the aftermarket speakers than the stock. every aftermarket system should have a small amp for a lil extra power and sound quality.

That does not explain why my old 100W aftermarket stereo with no extra amplification ($500) sounds better than the stock 400W system ($900) that I have now.

the way that i look at it is the factory system is nothing but a scam cause the radio aint worth a penny and the sub amp is nothing but a small 4 channel amp that usually a aftermarket cd player will out push any car that i have had i pull out the factory crap and replace with what i know is better. i dont use the speaker outputs on my cd player i have a seprate amp for my mids and highs. so if you wanna do that you have to get a cd player that has dual rca outputs, if you go that route then you put less strain on your cd player power supply. but i have been messing with car systems for a long time so but i still dont know everything about them so if anybody has any better suggestions let me know..... like in the prev posts i have redone everything but the tweets in the door and i have no problem with my system but here pretty soon i am goign to upgrade to a indash touch screen and some headrest screens, so good luck to ya and if there is anything else that i can help with just let me know.........

i had the fosgate system in my sentra spec-v, the ride i had before the x. after about 2 years the headunit stopped working properly and i replaced it with an aftermarket. the sound quality nearly doubled, mainly because the amount of watts the aftermarket unit put out were way higher than the factory fosgate system. even though the factory system has the fosgate name on it, it's made for nissan and not quite the same as an aftermarket fosgate system. so, when i bought the x i chose to get the factory nissan set up knowing that i could upgrade the system myself and have it sound way better. i have a pioneer headunit, pioneer speakers the whole way around, and kenwood subs and a sony amp. it sounds great. my suggestion to you is that if you really want everything to sound better, upgrade the whole system yourself and try to sell the fosgate stuff on ebay. someone is bound to buy them.

Nobody seems to be listening...............

The question is this:

Should I plunk in my $300 Infinity reference speaker set or keep the stock set?

Which speaker set will sound better?

easy man...everyone here is just trying to help. the bottom line is no one here can tell you whether or not you should drop the money on it. if you're really not happy with the way it sounds, then go for it. otherwise, keep the stock set up. the only way you're going to know what's going to sound better is to change out the speakers as see what happens. if it sounds better, problem solved. if not, then you just wasted your money. it's really up to you and what your tastes are. i knew from the start i was going to upgrade my stereo, that's why i opted not to get the fosgate system. i really don't think that anyone else can offer you much else in the way of advice, since none of us know what your truck's stereo sounds like and what your personal tastes are.

AS I SAID, I WOULD PUT THE INFINITYS IN

D-oh! Guess I forgot. Heh, heh..... need to re-read the threads sometimes.....

I appreciate your suggestions, guys. The obvious choice is to try it out and see if I like them, but being a very busy fellow I always try to get a good answer before I do stuff because I don't want to have to take the time out and re-do it if I don't like it.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. I'm a cheap bastard and always want to save a buck, so the last thing I want to consider is a new system to replace the new system in my X.

I'll try the speakers first and let you know what it sounds like. If that doesn't work I'll get a new crossover (per the audio engineer at work). Failing that, I'll probably just keep things as they are, because even though it could always be better, it's a pretty damn good system anyway.

well thats all that really matters, if you like it or not. when i bought my x the factory system wasnt doing it for me so i upgraded the whole system and know i love it. so just try it out and see thats all you can really do.....
