What's the location of the crossover for the tweeters and woofers in the 1st gen xterra? I've heard the sound from the tweeters will be too loud in comparison with the woofers, so i'm wondering if it's a simple snip of a few wires and plugging the new one in or removing a bunch of things.

If it's anything like the 2nd gen w/ the Rockford stereo, then the crossover is built into the amp, and the tweeters have a high pass filter soldered directly onto them. I think the 1st gen w/ the RF is the same, and without the RF, it's probably just the high pass filters on the tweets and no crossover at all. Someone with a first gen will chime in soon enough to confirm this.

That reminds me, should've mentioned my head unit is an aftermarket one, if that makes any difference, thanks J everett

If you have an aftermarket stereo and are already getting sound out of the speaker, then the original stock stereo wasn't an RF, or if it was, then the RF amplifier was bypassed. So your current system isn't using any crossovers at all. The tweeters just have high-pass filters built into them.

got the woofers in, didn't get to the tweeters today, ran out of time before work started. Anyone with a first gen care to chime in?

The stock tweeters have a crude high pass in them, i run all Alpine stuff off the factory deck, through a Kenwood amp, Installed a kicker sub to keep everything in balance. For the non RF system, there is no crossover. Hope that helps.

So both the tweeters and woofers are receiving the full frequency range over the wire?
Would it work then for me to cut off the tweeter and put a 2-way 6 1/2" speaker in the woofer location and just run the fronts that way with an aftermarket HU. Would the 2-way receive full front power (and full range) if the tweeter wires are left disconnected?
Sorry, I'm not that experienced with car audio. Thanks.
