this is something ive been curious about for a while now, but havent found anything...

how would one go about sealing an engine? you know to keep water out, i wish i could just spray some scotch guard on it!

Are you talking about for deep water crossings?

Just a couple beginning steps
1. Relocate the alternator higher up (has not been done that I know of)
2. Relocate the ECU higher up (in the glove box works)
3. Install a snorkel, and a sealed airbox (volant seems to work best for sealability)
4. Extend diff/tcase/trans breather lines as high as possible
5. Make sure everything is greased and lubed very well.

That about covers it.

There is also a water cooled alt out there that should fit the first gen X's, but I don't know anyone who has tried it. It's a completely sealed alt.

I would also think about sealing all the exposed electrical connections with liquid electrical tape, or the equal. Hit all the wiring with a silicon spray.

Just remember, electronics and engine internals do not like water.

Do your best to seal all the floor plugs, and firewall grommets, too.

Also the postive battery lead to the starter motor will need to be protected, as that goes down pretty low as well.

The ECU move is not easy...my harness had no slack at all, I could barely move the ECU back and forth enough to unbolt it, let alone run the harness to the glove box area.

I'm thinking that just potting it is better...it works for military applications at least.

:D

Add checking all the vacuum lines' integrity too...they can suck water in as well...

And

The Diff and various drive train breathers need extending.

Also - I find that if you do not make sure that your air filter box is tightly closed, it can pop open, and wet vac whatever body of water you might be in....transforming your engine into an aluminum aquarium.
