Any suggestions on which on/off road tires are the best for 08 xterra?

All depends on your budget, with tires you pretty much get what you pay for. BFG AT KO, is pretty much the benchmark. Most manufacturers find some way to compare with them at some time.

BFG AT KO, All my rides have them. My 09 Tacoma, my 92 Jeep, and my 00 X.
My Buddy has 35" BFG MT's on a SAS Ranger, 35K miles, still awesome tread.
My 92 Jeep has 50k on the tires, still look great. Black side out of course :)

I agree with the BFG A/T KO's being one of the top choices. They seem to last forever. Some guys report 80K miles on a set when properly rotated. Other options would be the Nitto Terra Grappler, Firestone Destination and Bridgestone Duelers. It all depends on what your budget is.

i completely agree with them on the BFG at ko, b/c i own a set myself and i will do the same next time

Nitto Terra Grapplers are great... I don't know if you'll get the same wear out of them as the BFG All Terrain's though. Still they are a great tire at a good price.

What are you looking for in a tire soupman. There are a lot of really great tires out there but not all of them will be great for your needs. How many miles do you drive per year? How often are you off road and what are your off-road conditions? Are you looking for something that can get you through mud, snow or ice?

Thanks all. I got the BFG AT ko's. Expensive but hopefully worth the costs. Hearing alot of good thing about these tires. The tire guys had them on their trucks also

I've got a buddy that has a set on his pathfinder and he drives the thing like he stole it and that's no exaggeration. And it's all highway miles. He's put 45K on his and still has a good 3/8" tread depth.

Yeah - They're considered examples of Wally World's practice of having items made for them that look like the name brands, but have been made with as many corners cut as possible to allow THEM to buy the item as cheaply as possible, and to then SELL them at the greatest possible profit, to YOU.

:D

Besides, the 32x11.5/15's fit a stock X anyway.

I just put some toyo open country H/T on mine.

Very satified! very quiet. feel like driving on a cloud. Never tested them off road though but the review seem to say they'll do the job.

LOL

Yeah, reviews that imply a hwy tire will work well off road, that's sweet.

:D

The rule of thumb with reviews, like on tirerack, etc...is that the user's EXPECTATIONS are what are REALLY being shown, NOT the tire's performance.

For example, there are MT's rated as 9's or 10's for handling...as well as AT's, and hwy tires, and even high performance tires.

Based upon the reviews, it would imply that the MT would work for an autocross race as well as the shaved high performance tire, heck, they have the same rating....right?

So - when a reviewer rates a MT highly for street performance, they're typically comparing it to the tires they are used to...

...and the same goes for some one used to hwy tires, etc.

Its all a relative bias.

So - take reviews with a grain of salt, otherwise you'd be running hwy tires in a mud bog competition, and a set of Mud Tires in an autocross competition.

:D

The simple fact is that paddle wheel-like lugs work better in mud, and terrible on the road....and that on a dry road, a soft sticky compound with no tread will work better than one with deep lugs, etc.

So what works best off road cannot work best ON road...its like soccer cleats to play basket ball, and basketball sneakers to play soccer...NEITHER is a good idea out of their element....

...as the elements involved are for opposite objectives.

Deep tread blocks sink into soft terrain...but, are like wobbly blocks of rubber on hard surfaces.

Shallow blocks with minimal voids can grip hard terrain, but skate over soft terrain.

Soft sticky rubber wears more quickly, but gives great grip on smooth hard surfaces....but might rip or puncture more easily.

Hard tough rubber lasts longer, but may not grip smooth terrain as well...but may be harder to tear or puncture.

Adding silica to the carbon in a rubber compound adds traction in wet conditions.

A tread pattern that pumps water out from under it hydroplanes less...but can pack with mud.

A tread pattern with large voids between tread blocks will tend to place more contact pressure on each block to drive it deeper into soft material, but provide less rubber on the road for street performance.

Sipes, and other micro tread elements add traction edges, for improved wet and icy conditions....large blocks of rubber can ride up on patches of water (Hydroplane) more easily.

A tread pattern with tread elements at the sides, for a more square shoulder, etc...will have better flotation off road, and side hill better along sloped terrain, or in soft terrain needing side bite for traction.

And so forth.

:D

If we all apply a bit of logic...some of the marketing hype can be filtered out.

Example:

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/AT_ko_edge_tread.sized.jpg
Pic illustrating the side bite of the AT ko

http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/general/ge_grabber_at2_owl_ci2_l.jpg
Pic illustrating the less aggressive AT2

So - its not like the AT2 doesn't work, its just that a tread similarity is not the same as equivalent performance....if the remaining difference is relevant to your objectives.

When I was researching tires and got the Generals I found most reviews and magazine editorials indicated that they were pretty much in the same performance envelope as the BFG AT/KOs. If I couldn't find Generals, I'd go with BFG. If I was made of money, I'd go with Toyo :)

Another thing to filter when reading customer reviews is what the guy is driving. A guy driving a Ford F350 bitching about a tire slipping on wet road acceleration doesn't mean the tire will suck for an Xterra. Apples and oranges comparison: different weight, different torque. I pay attention when the review comes from someone driving a comparable vehicle.

I put Yokohama Geolander h/t on mine. Great snow and wet traction. Lacking in off-road, but hey they are on-road tires. Quiet and wear well. About to replace them after 65k miles (still have good tread), just want some A/T's. Going to put either dueler's or tko on next.

depends on the size you want also...the 2nd gen can have 265/70/16 up to 285/75/16 (with heatmod of course)... I have the FS Destinations AT @ 265/75/16 and they look awesome. Depends on your budget and what your style is.

Not just any 33 inch tire can be used on a 2nd gen though. First off, anything on a 15 inch rim is out of line. I don't know that anyone has found a 15 inch rim that will fit. Most tires that are on a 16 inch rim come in metric size. This means it will be a number that looks like this "LT###/##R16". LT tires are best for the truck because they can easily handle the extra weight that many members of this site add on to their trucks. 285/75R16 is the biggest tire that you can fit on a 2nd gen, but you will have to do the melt mod. This is 33 inches tall and 11.5 inches wide approximately. You can't go any wider without having some serious rubbing, or without doing some serious trimming. You can also fit a 255/85R16, but tires in that size are more difficult to find, however it is slightly taller. Hope this helps.

I'd disagree I've had AT2 on work trucks.. Wasn't the worst tire I have ever ran but wasn't the best..
When you look how much are you really saving?
10 per tire maybe a little more..
Bfg is the world leader is off road tires.. They didn't copy that
R
Tread pattern .. They invented it..
I run KOs on my wires truck.. And Goodyear Duratracs on the Xterra

What makes you think that at2s look more aggressive. They dont have near the sidewall cleating that the BFGs do.

I need to get a new set of tires. I have an 09 Offroad. I barely go offroading, so I am looking for something all road. My xterra came with the BF Rugged Trail and they died at 30k miles >( . What a terrible tire (I have rotated them and everything). I am thinking on getting the BFG AT KO. But I have been told by the tire seller that this is a 10 ply tire and that they will feel very hard on my xterra and be noisier. What is your experience?

Thanks!

Just bought a set of these. I've only had em for a few weeks but so far they're awesome. The road noise IMO is not bad at all and people claim to get a bajillion miles out of them. I have heard nothing but good things about them and they weren't really all that expensive either. My vote is go with the BFG TA/KO's. It's a good tire.

Hugetanker,

What size are yours? I need 265 75 R16 and that is the reason why they are 10 ply, they dont make them any softer. They are not even P265 75 R16 tehy are a different rating. Anyone with a R16 BFG AT KO?

Thanks!

Another vote for BFG ATs here. Had three sets of tires on my prior 4Runner which lasted me 11 years and 180k miles. Factory Goodyear (40k); BFG AT (70k); BFG AT (70k).

I'm running 32x11.5x15. I havn't researched the size you need all that much, but if you go to tire rack or similar sites you can read reviews from people on the size you are thinking about buying. Or just google it and I'm sure you'll find tons of reviews.

Maybe this will help a bit on deciding on these tires or not.

Old thread is old?

BFG ATs are great. They must be or else so many damn people wouldn't have them.

Surprised no one has mentioned Goodyear Duratracs or Kelly Safari TSR... Both more aggressive than BFG AT at a similar price and both have great on-road manners.

Is there anyone here with the new xterra that has the 16in wheels? I really want the bfg at's but for the size my xterra uses (P265 75 16) they don't make the passenger vehicle one (hence the P before 265) they only make the LT 265 (light truck) which is a much harder tire since it has more wire mesh. Has anyone tried the LT 265 75 16?

I have a 2nd gen Xterra (2005-2012) and I have BFG AT/KOs. I won't run anything except LT tires on my Xterra, because I use it as a truck, not so much a passenger car. I would recommend going with the LT 265/75R16 or LT 285/75R16. The 285 will fit with just the melt mod if you want to upgrade. Either way, the X rides find with the BFGs on them. In fact, it rides better than expected.

I'd like to get the BFG AT's as well, but I wished they offered them in something else besides the load rating E in the 265/75/16. C or D would be nice due to the reduced weight. I'm looking to stay around stock sizes as the best compromise for my use. In order to do that with the BFG AT's I'd have to run 265/70/16 which I don't want OR 275/70/16 both of which you can get in D.

Only a few hundred of us have with excelant results. The reason that they offer them in that load rating is they are very popular in the full size truck world

I've ran Hankook Dynapro atm RF10's for almost 2 years now with great results. Seldom need 4wd in snow and wearing great. Ride smoother than BFG's.One of the work trucks is running Falken's and they are cupping bad after only 20k at my office. Goodyear silent armors and BFG's take abuse well in our fleet but but the BFG's last longer. One truck has had Dynapro's for about 9 months now and they look great. I think the Dynapro's handle mud better but know if they have as a tuff a sidewall. No issues with them but know BFG's are solid. BFG rugged trails don't fair nears as well the KO's as I've sliced 2 on my work truck.

I run a set on my LJ and couldn't be happier. I've got about 9K on them so far (some of which are pretty hard trail miles) The tires still look great and show very little ware. This model handles well in all conditions and has a stout sidewall which is great for me since I off-road frequently.
