I am new here. Hello everyone. We (My new wife & I) own a 2004 Xterra 2WD. It is her primary vehicle. We got married last weekend and while on our honeymoon a weird thing happened to our X.

We had stopped at a scenic overlook in northwestern Ark Monday. When we got out my wife locked the door with the door switch on the pass side. When we went to get back in, I reached thru an open window (driver's side) and hit the switch to unlock the doors. Note: We never used the key fob, as it was on her keys inside the truck. When I opened the door, the alarm went off (the first time I've ever even heard it)! I stuck the key in and tried to start it, and nothing. We then dug out the key fob and turned off the alarm. After that the thing wouldn't start at all. You could turn the key on and the dash would light up normally, and everything worked just fine. It just wouldn't turn over when I engaged the starter.

After calling Nissan's 800#, and getting outsourced to Pakistan or somehwere in that region, and calling Nissan dealer in Fayeteville, and one at home in Dallas, it was determined that nothing could be done. I even tried reseting the comp by disconnecting the battery, and jumping the starter at the silenoid (it would spin then but wouldn't engage the ring gear). They (Nissan) swore up and down that the security system would not interrupt the starter circuit! What the h%@# is it for then? Was my question. Ended up calling AAA and getting it towed to Fayetteville, AR. They fixed it after a few hours of diagnostics. Ready for this? After reading their bill ($400), it seems that an $18 security relay was replaced!!!! The diag. did show some corrosion on a few terminals, but by reading the bill, the relay is what fixed it. Not having any idea on a timeline we had already reserved a rental and resumed our honeymoon. We picked the Xterra up on the way home thursday. But we did get to ride around in a '07, E85 Dodge Ram crew cab for a few days. Nice truck, but I'd rather have been in our X!

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this with their Nissan? I wonder if the sequence of events confused the relay and locked it out, or blew it up? I thought about trying to make it do it again, just to see. But I'll need another relay, it seems, if I'm right. So I haven't tried it YET. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Or do y'all think it was just a huge coincidense? Thanks for any ideas.

I have done the thing with reach thur the window and unlocking the door. But when I hit the key fob everything is fine.

Yeah - me too, just hit the lock button, and it stopped the alarm, and re-set itself.

Maybe the fob hiccuped and threw an unrecognized code at first?

Anyway - Let us know how it turned out!
