The 2001 Xterra that I am getting will need new tires pretty quick. From a lot of hours of research for mostly highway/city driving 85%/15% it looks like the Kumho Ecsta STX KL12 might be a good choice. Any thoughts?

I will be staying with the OEM wheels what size would maximize highway MPG? Stay with OEM size tire?

Thanks for reading a noob post!

i have cooper st tires. sorry i dont know the exact size. they are a semi aggressive tread and arent supper noisy one the road, they are amazing in all elements (rain, snow, mud, dirt, gravel, and pavement. lol). they were the same size as oem. I paid 600 total mounted and balanced. i have driven on them for over a year now and i haven't noticed any tread wear too. I love them and they were pretty cheap. just my thoughts. here is a pic for you to visualize them. and welcome to the site.

I'm a big fan of Kumho tires. For the money it's tough to find anything better. I ran Kumho's on my SVT Focus and my wife's Focus sedan for as long as we've had them. I did run a set of Nitto's once. They were really grippy, but didn't last long at all. If you're looking for a good tire without dropping a ton of cash, I vote Kumho's.

NTB has a sale on Yokohama tires, buy 3 get one free. I was considering the Geolandar H/T-S G051 since I mostly do highway driving. Does anyone have experience with these, especially for use when there is snow on the road. I saw in an earlier thread a recommendation for someone looking at Duratrac to go up to 285/75/16. Would this be a good thing to do? Mine currently has 245/70/16 tires. Thanks for any help towards making my decision. **** I went back and read the fine print ..... requires a 4 wheel alignment! ****

235's I do not believe came on the Xterra, it should have been 265/70/16's.

I typo'd the previous message ... My X currently has 245/70/16 Michelins.

Since my X is only 2WD I am strongly considering getting the General Grabber AT 2. They seem to get very good reviews in all weather, even snow and other than some reported slightly higher noise levels on the highway for the money look like the way to go. Going from a Mercury Sable to the X will cause some re-learning on handling a rear wheel drive vehicle in snow. I am still a little lost on whether to stick with the current 245/70/16 size, go up to a 265/70/16 or back to the 255/65/16 OEM size. Any opinions? Thanks!

I got my new tires mounted this afternoon. I can tell a big difference in the ride already. I went with BFG Long Trail 255/70/16 from Discount Tire Direct. $500 for the set and my $70 rebate should be here by the end of June. My mechanic aired them up to 44 lbs. Does this sound like a good pressure for mostly highway driving?

If im thinking correctly the air in the tire expands during highway travel, so I would think that is to high for mainly highway driving. The tire should tell you the recommended tire pressure which should be around 36PSI. To much air can cause the center of the tire to wear out faster than the rest.

Below is the 1010tire calc results for stock vs. my current BFG Long Trails T/A tour tires. Does this mean I need to add 3.453% to my mileage at the end of each fill up to calc fuel mileage?
