I was in the market for some new tires for my 2001 4X4 XE. They came with BF Goodrich 265/70R15, althought the manual states the steel rims come with 235/70R15. My rims are steel. I do a lot of HWY driving and was thinking of going 235. Will the snow traction be better or worse with the narrower 235? I was thinking of BF Goodrich Long Trail....

In general, you are better off with the wider tire, as it provides you with a larger "footprint" and therefore more traction.

Yeah, the more rubber, the better the traction....

If you get an agressive tread at least...otherwise, not always.

At 235 the contact patch would be marginal at best, and give much longer braking distances, etc.

What do you think about BF Goodrich Long Trail's? The winter rating is only 7, but I am hoping it will be fairly decent.

If you want winter traction the BFG AT ko's would be much better than the long trails.

If you want packed snow traction, the Bridgestone REVO AT is very good on road...as the snow gets deeper, you need a more aggressive tread though.

Do you also off road?

I will check these tires out...

No off roading.

In blizzards and deeper snow, the AT ko's kick ass...pretty much unstoppable.

When the snow is hard packed or icy, they are less effective, but still good.

The REVO is better than the ko when icy or harder packed, but not aggressive enough when the snow is softer or deeper.

Usually I would be driving in more hard packed snow/ice, only a few times a year the roads are really full of deep snow around where I live.

I will look at the REVO's online...

thanks!

Funny someone else would want the BFG long trails......Thats What I wanted in a 17'' and after a long argument about the availiable width not being as wide as what I was used to,(not me that cared about the width ) wound up (settling) for the Michelin LTX M/S in 265 70 17....nice tires, but I didn't want that nice......O and they rub up front when I back up and turn at the same time, thats with the splash extensions removed
